I am trying to find some details on Deborah Lennard who arrived in Australia on the James Pattison in 1836 and married Mathew Devine. I would like to know where she lived before coming to Australia, parents, sibblings or any other information about her early life.
-
Do you have her death certificate? Does it name her parents?
-
The James Pattison came from Cork in Ireland.
-
Thanks.
Yes I did know the James Pattison came from Cork and evidently many of the women were recruited from Limerick but I can't find any Deborah Lennard in any of the parish records.
I don't have her death certificate at this stage but will keep trying to find it.

On her marriage record it states bc 1811 Dublin.

Thanks for the suggestions. Her death certificate has parents unknown so I am guessing she was an orphan or that she never spoke about them to her family.

I am interested in Deborah Lennard (Leonard) - my great (x3) grandmother b. 1816 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland (maybe!). Deborah Leonard, Job: Cook; Wages: £10; Age: 18; Ship: James Pattison; Arrival Date: February 11, 1836; Location: Sydney, NSW; Status: Passenger; Employed by: Mrs. J.B. Bettington; Residence: Piercefield, Hunters River, NSW, Australia. [Biog Item No. 100233363]. I have plenty of info on her after arrival in Aust. What I am seeking is names/details of parents and location along with any Sources. I note there was an Isabella Leonard on the Red Rover in 1832 but know nothing about her and any possible connection. I have been trying to get my hands on your (unavailable) book Colonial Duchesses. Here's some more notes I have on her: Deborah was baptised 8 January 1816 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. Name at Baptism is given in the register as "Gobineta Leonard" - Gobinet/Gobnait is an Irish Christian name which was anglised to 'Deborah' (the Irish Saint Gobnait (Feast day 11 February) Saint Gobnait had a strong affinity with bees and the biblical name “Deborah” literally means “bee”.) Deborah's parents are stated as Michael (Michalis) Leonard and Mary (Maria) Horgan; sponsors James (Jacobus) Fitzgerald and Mary (Maria) Fitzgerald. [Source: Catholic Parish Registers NLI, Tralee, Microfilm 04269/03] Deborah emigrated from Cork, Ireland on the James Pattison, aged 18 years, leaving 31 Oct 1835 and arriving in Sydney 7 February 1836. This was one of the first London Emigration Committee voyages of Irish single women to Australia. On arrival, she was employed by Mrs J.B. Bettington as a cook at an annual wage of 10 pounds, receiving a further 12 pounds if remained for 12 months. She remained for 20 months. She married Mathew Devine on 16th October 1837 at Glendon, New South Wales, Australia, by Banns by G.K. Rusden, Chaplain, the witnesses were Helenus Scott of Glendon and Mary Rochford of Jerry's Plains. They had an estimate 15 children including the following together, born 1838-1861 at Paterson, Vacy and Gresford, NSW.
