Title: Help with word/terminology -text now uploaded!
Post by: DizzyLizzyMorris on Tuesday 26 March 19 10:36 GMT (UK)
Hi I need help to decipher the word under a name. I don’t think it’s a maiden name as they usually start m.s. any ideas? Looks like Nandeserres? I can't find any record of marriage between them so not sure if that's relevant.

Also I can't read the maiden name of Margaret Knox, it looks like Deans?
Ayhelp greatly appreciated.

With high hopes, Elizabeth

I think possibly Flora Muir Campbell Dunn's occupation is Handsewer  :-\

I agree Jen. Looks like parents may not have married and this is why mother's details would be written this way (rather than Flora Marshall m.s. Dunn).

Christening 16 Oct 1807 KILMAURS, AYR
Birth Date   10 Oct 1807

Thank you all so much for you help.

I agree it looks like Deans but it's drawing blanks in searches so thought I'd put it out there. Everything I've found relates a Margaret Caldwell and Fulton Knox. The dates all match, the census and the children. Its just this name Deans that doesn't fit. As for the other word, handsewer, would make sense. It is indeed that Flora Muir Campbell and I had traced her and her parents back but I was just curious as I can't trace the Marshall line back further with certainty and I just wondered if the word was something to do with the fact they seem to be unmarried. Just looking for clues. Flora Muir lived until she was 86 but he was already dead when their daughter was married. I guess some questions may never be answered :)

Mistakes happen on certs and info given. A pain when it does for sure! Even bride and grooms are known to make mistakes in respect of their parents' names.

What details show on the groom's death reg? Guessing it may be Caldwell for his mother from what  you say.
