Title: Parish Enquiry
Post by: Bardany on Monday 25 March 19 16:01 GMT (UK)
My great grandfather joined the Army in 1852. His enlistment record says he was born in Clones Parish Co.Monaghan where I have concentrated my search but on the most  (a newspaper obit ) states he was born in Co Cavan. Can anyone say if there is any part of Cavan in Clones Parish?
Many thanks in advance
Bardany

Link for Clones R.C. Parish. ... Says Monaghan and Fermanagh!
Clones Parish does not appear to include any of Co Cavan.

There is the Clones RC Parish and more than one Civil Parish called Clones, than there is the Church of Ireland, Methodist and Presbyterian Parishes, none of them seem to be in Cavan.

It's only Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic churches that use a parish system. The COI Parish usually in the same as the Civil Parish since COI was the Established or State church. Methodist churches are organised within Circuits and Presbyterians within Presbyteries.

I would expect as it's an Army record it's one of the Civil Parishes, yes?

He would obviously have been present when the enlistment record was written & have given the information himself, however the obit could have been written by someone who may not have known the accurate facts.

What year was he born - have you browsed the parish records as suggested by conahycalling? What other records have you researched? What regiment did he join?
