Title: Affidavit Baptism
Post by: Kakaka10 on Thursday 14 March 19 13:27 GMT (UK)
Hi Helpful people
My 3 X great grandfather John Cole (1795-1869) was baptised in August 1795 but for some reason the baptism wasn't logged in the parish record. I was recently at the Kent archives and History centre and discovered an Affidavit sworn by a Susan Harrison stating that she had attended the Baptism  at the Lydd All Saints Church in August 1795 and that the infant had been baptised John and his parents were William and Ann. Can anyway shine some light on why John  would need to prove he was baptised 32 YEARS AFTER THE FACT?  He was married in Dover St Mary the Virgin church in 1819. Had 4 children baptised in the church and then was in need of proving his parents had him Baptised. Copy Attached

Any suggestions?

Thanks Kind regards

Lauchie

Its a bit of a mystery

There is no attachment. It could have been for some government purpose, e.g. military or civil service, or the Poor Law.
