Hi there,
I just wondered if anyone knows whether the names Biddulph and Biddle in Staffordshire might be interchangeable please. I know Biddulph is a place in Staffs and near by is Biddle Moor and that people's surname are sometimes place related.
I know my ancestors Micheal Ball abt 1788 • Mavesyn Ridware, Staffordshire, England, married Catherine Biddulph 10 Apr 1809 • Armitage,Stafford,England which was about 10mins from Mavesyn Ridware. She was born 1783ish in Colwich according to the 1851 census for Mavesyn Ridware.
The only birth for around this time in Colwich is Catherine Biddle bp.5/8/1781, dau. of Thomas and Mary of Bobbins Lane. They have other Biddle children except for Joseph Biddulph b1786 if his parents Thomas and Mary are the same Thomas and Mary.
There are no Thomas Biddle buried in Colwich in the correct time frame but there is a Thomas Biddulph born in 1747 ish and bur.11/11/1823 Colwich.
Maybe there is a Biddle and a Biddulph family in the area with similar names. Maybe there was a Catherine Biddulph but she wasn't christened or the Christening hasn't been transcribed for ancester/findmypast /family search yet??
Have you ever heard of these names being used interchangeably?
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly the place Biddulph is often referred to as Biddle. Also Biddulph Moor is often called Biddle Moor

Thank you, I am just having a bit of difficulty getting back further as I am not sure if I go for Biddulph or Biddle. Perhaps I will never know as I can't find a baptism for a Thomas Biddle or Biddulph c 1747 in or near Colwich.

Hi,
I am related to the Biddulph family from Colwich. They appear in the church records around 1760’s with Biddles predating them by a decade or so. There are references to Biddles with the alias Biddulph in the Colwich church records there too!
There is a Thomas Biddulph born 1760’s who married a Margaret in 1790’s. There are also several Thomas Biddulph’s marrying Mary’s around that time.

I also saw a records of a Thomas and Margaret Biddle having a child called Sampson. This was around the time of my Thomas and Margaret Biddulph were having children and I never saw Thomas and Margaret Biddle anywhere else in the church records either as a marriage or having other children so I wondered if the name was used interchangeably? Generally Biddulph is spelt correctly in the parish records. There are cases of Biddle’s and Biddulph’s having children in the same months in the colwich records so I don’t think it’s the case of the church staff mishearing the name however.

Thanks for getting in touch, it is so confusing isn't it, I am not sure whether to trace my family back using Biddle or Biddulph so have hit a bit of a brick wall with them. I wonder if we share some of the same ancestors?

I have Biddle/Biddulph ancestors and Bourne ancestors who have various been written as Buren, Bown, Brown, Bouren etc. A lot depends on illiterate ancestors with heavy accents

Did you ever get any further with the Biddulph/Biddle mystery in Colwich? If it helps I have dna tested at Ancestry so it would be interesting if you have too and if we match.
