Title: Orphanage/Boarding School puzzle
Post by: patvp1 on Wednesday 06 March 19 01:00 GMT (UK)
Have been meaning to try and work out this puzzle for quite some time and hope someone can help..My mother and her three sisters were placed in an orphanage/boarding school for some reason and I have no idea where or why....so the story is...Heather Agnes McKay 1908-1979, Jean Stewart McKay 1912-1988, Isabella McKay 1913-1938, Annie McKay (my mother) 1915-2002.  Parents Alexander McKay 1876 born Doune Kilmadock died 01 April France and Flanders. Charlotte Hall Born Alva Clackmannanshire 1888 Died 1948 London (she had married again in 1915 in Windsor U.K. I have no idea why my Grandmother never took the children with her ?? my mother could recall them being sent to Windsor as they reached the age of 15 my mother being the last she remembered a train journey from Scotland to Windsor and being sick on the train.  The only other info I have is the name "Craigie" or similar.  I have checked out all orphanages in Scotland etc with no results...can anyone help, this has been a puzzle for quite a number of years and now of course with all of them having died I have no idea..maybe someone could put me on another track..TIA.

You haven’t said where the children were born or what year Alexander was killed.  Isabella b 1913 and a re-marriage in England 1915 gives a tight timescale

EDIT

FreeBmd has no marriage in 1915 - 1918 for a Charlotte McKay anywhere in England

Alexander was killed 01.04.1915 according to military records.  So Annie was an infant or not yet born.

Charlotte McKay married William F Russell, Jun qtr 1924 Windsor?

This seems to be the right couple - in Sussex Gardens, Paddington just before WW2, Jean with them.

Charlotte born 14.11.93 but may have “adjusted” as William was b 1895.

Death reg for Charlotte March qtr 1948 shows her as 54 (1894)

Consistent with birth Nov 1893 then.

But in 1901 Scotland I think she is a 12 year old adoptee in Dunblane.

Puzzled about Isabella shown as b 1913

If Jean was b Dec 1913 and Annie 1915 - Isabella must have been born end of 1914 or very early 1915 depending on what month Annie was born

Nothing on SP in Dunblane & Lecropt and that is where Annie’s birth was registered in 1915

If Charlotte married 1924 Heather was 16.  If the children were “sent for” as they reached 15yrs it suggests a school rather than an orphanage.

Annie was 9 when Charlotte remarried and the wording of this posts suggests she never saw her mother for 6 years??

The Dean Orphan Hospital was built above Dean Village in Edinburgh in 1833. A rather imposing building it was converted into the Dean Gallery in 1999. part of the Gallery of Modern Art. The late father of my ex was an inmate there when the family fell on hard times. He recalled the daily march down Orchard Brae to what is now Flora Stevensons Primary School, but which was a secondary school in his time. The area of Craigleith where I live is very close to it, so this is possibly what you are referring to ?
