Please can anyone help me trace this family. John Stevenson married Janet Strang about 1816. John Stevenson was born 1796 in Renfrewshire. Janet was born 1796 don't know where she was born. (Janets parents were James Strang and Janet Miller). John and Janet lived in Finneston, Glasgow and had about 10 children. Charles 1818, Janet 1822, Frances 1824, John 1828, Francis 1831, Alexander 1832, Isabella 1835, Andrew 1837, Jean 1838, James 1839. Have been searching for a marriage certificate or birth certificate for John or Janet, also tried looking for Charles the eldest childs birth certificate with no luck.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

Hiya,
According to Freecen's transcription John Stevenson age 45 , agricultural labourer and Janet Stevenson age 44 are with the rest of the family on the 1841 Census at Verreville House, Barony.
All the children listed on CaroleW's post are there plus a Jean Stevenson age 3.

Hi Campsie
All these events were before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855. At best, you would find an entry in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs). The information in these is very often no more that a simple one liner with little detail.
Like you, I cannot see any entries in the OPR database on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There are lots of reasons why you may not find entries for them. Registers lost or destroyed, family belong to different denomination that Presbyterian/established Church of Scotland which the OPRs are connected to, family did not have their children baptised etc.
Some help notes here www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/church-registers

1851 Census
Barony, Parish of Anderston, 30 Lancefield Street
John Stevenson Head age 55 Carter born Renfrewshire, Renfrew
Janet Stevenson Wife age 54 born Renfrewshire, Mearns
Alexr Stevenson Son age 18 Bottle Maker (apprentice ) born Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Andrew Stevenson Son age 13 Blacksmith (apprentice) " " "
Francies Stevenson Son age 10 Scholar " " "

Spellings per Freecen transcription.
So Janet has given Mearns, Renfrewhire as her place of birth.

John & Janet were both still alive in 1861 so downloading a copy of John's death cert should give you his parents names

With Carole and Looby's details, I wonder if this is Janet's death:
JANET STEVENSON...other surname STRANG
Age 72
Mother's maiden name MILLER
1869
644/1 2462
Glasgow Central District

I can't see Janet's birth entry so far, there are possible siblings born in Mearns in the late 1700 to early 1800s with parents showing as James Strang and Janet Miller.
One christening, for example, here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X17C-94M
The death cert will let you confirm details to let you work back with confidence.

Hi all, many thanks for replying to my post the information is very helpful.
Yes I had found them on the 1841 and 1851 census, but couldn't make out the writing for where Janet Strang was born, now I know it was Mearns. I have a copy of John Stevensons death certificate he died june 1865 at 16 Crawford St., Glasgow, but there is no informaton on his mother or father that column has been left blank. It's mostly his parents that I am trying to trace as I know that Janet Strangs parents were James Strang and Janet Miller. I will follow up on the siblings.
Thank you all so much.
