Hello
Does anyone have the book Aberdeenshire & North East Family History Society's The Kirkyard of Ellon? I’m looking for my maternal grandmothers burial place.
Thanks in advance

Yes. What is her name?
-
Martha Will Norrie (nee Coull) died 1969.
Many thanks

There is no reference to her on any of the monumental inscriptions. There is one Coull and one "Norie", but not her. The booklet is for the old kirkyard. I wonder if she is buried in the newer cemetery, which the booklet does not cover?
-
Do you know where the old Kirkyard is? I know St Mary’s on the Rock have a graveyard but thought the other was just as you’re coming into Ellon from the Peterhead side. In reality there are three sections to that graveyard I’m talking about. Perhaps she’s not there at all, it’s only because my mother remembered her to be.
Thanks for your research

The booklet is for the old graveyard round the parish kirk, which is just south of the Square. St Mary's on the Rock is a different place. More recent burials are likely to be in the new cemetery, which, as you say, is on Castle Road as you come into Ellon from Peterhead.
You could always try to find a funeral notice in the Press and Journal. With a new cemetery like that at Ellon, it is not too hard to find a gravestone, if there is one, as they tend to be erected chronologically. Look for the 1969 ones (unless her husband pre-deceased her and you would have to look for the row with inscriptions for the year he died.

That's quite a recent death so best place to try if Rootschatters cant help would be Aberdeenshire Council Offices. Not sure which one. Gordon House Inverurie would be my guess. Good Luck

Well after traipsing the cemetery in Ellon this fine sunny afternoon, it looks like she’s not buried there! Well at least not in the oldest bit. Will have a look in the middle graveyard as she may be there. That will have to wait until another sunny Sunday.
Thanks for everyone’s help though.

Not much point traipsing around graveyards if there's no stone on the grave, or if she was cremated. I agree, ask the council, who have the burial records.
-
It was a nice day for traipsing! I’ve been to the local council office who say they don’t have burial records. They did say I could try the landscaping or something dept as there may be some records there. It was interesting that she did say that sometimes people write books on cemeteries and perhaps I might find it in there.

What's the name of her husband, and do you know when he died?
-
I had a look at a newspaper site for which I don't currently have a subscription and it shows John Knox Norrie, mason, was buried 21-11-1953. He seems to be Martha's husband. I am not completely certain, because I can't see the full newspaper page (Aberdeen Evening Express 19-11-1953), but it could be that he was buried at Turlundie cemetery near New Pitsligo. If someone with full access to a newspaper site could check, it would confirm it. In that case, Martha is likely to be buried there too.
-
Thank you so much. I couldn’t check his death records as there are many John Norries but with the middle name that made it easy. His death certificate acknowledges Martha as his second wife and the address on the death cert has been confirmed by an electoral roll to confirm they did live there. Perhaps a jaunt to New Pitsligo is on the cards 😂😂. Again, many thanks for your help.
