Hi,
Can anyone take a look at this chaps application and let me know when he arrived in New Zealand and any reasons he states for joining Force?
The archive details are as follows:
R24450239 ACIS 17627 P1 176 / 1883/1393
I know there is a facility to order documents but the min is 50 dollars which may or may not be worth it. ??? ??? ??? Incidentally, he's my great uncle. After this entry in Archives, there are numerous convictions and prison sentences.
On that subject, if any one could look in the remaining "mug shot catalogue" held at Wellington, the reference is : Photographs of Prisoners (R17928047). This covers years 1902-1906. I know our John was photographed in Dunedin in Oct 1901 so there is a chance he could appear.
Many Thanks.

Hi,
I have asked for the Moderator to move this to the Main Board, at the moment it is tucked away in the Resources and Offers Board.
Have also put the correct link up for the Looker Upper to pre-order the file you have requested.

Hi Spades,
Is there any chance you could look in that photo album R17928047 ? John Idle was still on the run in 1902 so his photo may be be inside as a wanted felon.
Regards Graysj.
-
Sorry, yes, of course. I forgot to tell you I’d go back and find it.

Many thanks Spades, don't forget my offer of a lookup at Kew Archives!
-
Thanks, Graysj.
I've been in and ordered the file via an archivist, as it can't be ordered online due to preservation reasons.
I'll go back early next week and look through it.

Hi Graysj,
Would this be John IDLE arriving Wellington from London in November 1880, per the Wairoa? And scroll to the bottom of the image page for a description of the voyage.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nh6/
And I see from a later article that he used the aliases of John GRAY and Charles BROWN, and in 1902 when sentenced to five years penal servitude for 'blowing up the safe at the Hampden Railway station with dynamite' :o, he also used CASEY.
So did he survive the five years?

And would you be wanting to have a look at these two files as well, perchance? ;D

p.s. I would suggest posting John's full name to this topic in case others can find anything on him.

Well, I can tell you that John IDLE survived incarceration. The 1905 Police Gazette show him in Discharged Prisoners:
John IDLE alias CASEY alias GREY was discharged from Dunedin Gaol on 27 July, 1906. His (previous) occupation was carpenter, he was 5' 11 1/2" tall, born in England (about) 1862, of pale complexion with dark brown hair, hazel eyes and large nose. Scar on palm of right hand and on left thumb. In the Remarks column it also states, 'F P. Photographed at Dunedin 22/10/01. See Police Gazette, 1902, page 236.'
Source: Police Gazette, 1905, page 282.

In the event that this link doesn't find the image you should search for 'police gazette 1906' on Archives New Zealand search engine, Archway https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/
The Gazettes have been digitized so you should find it pretty easily. If not, ask here for guidance and I'll help you.
So where did John IDLE disappear to after 27 July, 1906?
I wonder if he eventually skipped to Australia. Many did. But he might simply have adopted a new alias and vanished.

Hi Spades,
You have been busy. Poor John did have a rough time.
When he was last convicted he was using Brougham as his surname. I can find no likely deaths in NZ but there is one in Victoria in 1922 in the name of Brougham. The grave is at Nichols Point Cemetery. Not sure if there is any way of finding a DOB to verify he is our man without getting a certificate.
Yep, that must be him coming over on the Wairoa in 1880.
I'll add John's other names alias s to the subject, good idea. Many thanks.

Hi Graysj,
To save us going over old ground it might be best if you tell us everything you know about John IDLE so we can fill in the gaps.
Amongst us we have ready access to resources you won't be aware of, so any name variations may be gold.

When and where was he last convicted?
Was it in New Zealand?
What was the complete name/alias he used then?

From reply #12....
"born in England (about) 1862"
Could this be his birth?

Hi Minihaha,
Well spotted, thats John. I did get a birth his birth certificate but it didn't actually tell me anything surprising.

Just checking to see if John Brougham of Victoria had any "criminal form" since it is hard to change for some
Found this Ironic, A "John Brougham", a carpenter being robbed in 1915 at Ballarat by a young housebreaker he had befriended named John Mitchell (Alias Maxwell)

Hi Whiteout7,
Can you tell us more about John BROUGHAM? Was he in New Zealand, or in Australia?
Have you checked the New Zealand Police Gazettes which are available online at Archway?
It might be best if I cut your post and replies from this topic and create a new one for you on the Australia Board. That way you'll get more views. Shall I do that?

I will rewrite this:
graysj is the orginal poster
"John Brougham" buried in Mildura, Victoria, Australia in 1922 could possibly be "John Lindsey Brougham Idle" that dissappeared from New Zealand.
"John Lindsey Brougham Idle" was known to be a carpenter, he was also known to committ a few crimes ...... sometimes people that disappear just make the same mistakes all over again in a new country
"John Brougham" a carpenter of Ballarat, in Victoria, Australia in 1915 could possibly be the "John Brougham" that died in Mildura, Victoria, Australia in 1922.
I'm not certain that buying the death certificate of "John Brougham" than died in 1922 would show his birth date as the entry shows no parents? Would it show his trade of carpenter??
So no new topic
-
Hello Whiteout7,
That's interesting. All we know is that John Idle from England went to NZ and after a various terms of prison we can find no further trace of him. It could be that the John Brougham who is also a carpenter that you have found, is our man. If we could ascertain his age at death that might clinch it.
-
Forgot to say John Idle was born in 1861.
