Continuing with my family tree, I seem to have come to a dead end with my great grandfather on my mothers side. He was Thomas Edward Fifield born around 1861 and married an Eliza Jane Pepper. I an unable to trace any entries of his mother or father. The family hail from Stepney and Poplar.
-
What is his father's name from Thomas and Eliza's marriage certificate?
If you have not got it, consider purchasing it.
Added:
Father, Edward, mariner.
-
I have not purchased any records as yet as I live in New Zealand. I am however considering joining Ancestry.com but being retired the cost is rather high.

I just wanted to point out that he was Thomas EDWARD Fifield on his marriage, but when he had two of his children (Emma Lilian, and Jane Eliza) baptised, he was put as Thomas EDWIN Fifield. I doubt that would effect searching overly much, but you never know, so try both names in your hunt! (The girls were baptised on the same day, so a mistake in one would be replicated in the other).

There is a marriage in 1888 for a Thomas Edward Fifield to a Lara Lucy Long, and he is the son of William. This Thomas was born around 1862. (He shows in censuses with parents William and Ann)
The marriage for Thomas Edward Fifield that married Eliza Jane Pepper was in 1884, and he was the son of Edward, a mariner. This is the Thomas that baptised the two girls in 1890 in my post above. In 1871, this Thomas with father Edward, the cenus shows his father is EDWIN, a seaman in the RN. and his mother is Emma. They were all born in Portsmouth.
Added: by 1881, Edwin had died, and Emma had moved the family to Poplar.
-
So he was born Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Edwin/Edward are often used interchangably
I can't guarantee that this is him in the Royal Navy, but they noticed the use of both as well!

The father, Edwin/Edward is problematic.... in 1871 he is listed as born in Portsmouth, but earlier census, it looks more like he was born in Sussex. The Archives has this:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7905506 (if it is the same man....)

Thomas is younger than he thought he was:

Although the Edwin I am following is down as born Purbroook, its looks to me that he was born Sussex.

That was the "other" Thomas Edward Fifield. There was two of them born around the same time. :-\ We want the one married to Eliza Jane Pepper, so Thomas' parents are Edward/Edwin Fifield and Emma Newman.
-
How have you identified which family is yours.?
How are you descended from Thomas Edward Fifield and Eliza Jane Pepper?.
-
Wivenhoe, that is definitely my family
Lilian Florence was my maternal grandmother. Thank you to everyone for their help
