There are 84 Robert Pat(t)ersons aged 1 to 4 years in the 1901 census index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, of whom three, two aged 3 and one aged 4, are in Kilwinning.
If you go to www.scotlandspople.gov.uk you can download at modest cost a copy of the original census documents. Use Pat*rson in the search to pick up both spellings of the name. You can also
If you have already done this and it's not the person you are looking for, you need to tell us a bit more about him. Where did you find him and what age was he in whatever that document was? What other information do you know about him? Is it possible that he was illegitimate and recorded under a different name?

For what it's worth! Recorded in the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald (A&SH) of 24 November 1899, a male Paterson child was born at Kilwinning, father's initial was "H". As the notice was printed in the 24 November 1899 edition, I'd hazard the child was born during the week 17th - 24th November. The A&SH was, and remains, a weekly publication.
A database of it's BDM Notices can be searched at www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk - FREE!

The 1901 census was taken on 31 March 1901. Therefore a child aged 3 on census day would have been born between 1 April 1897 and 31 March 1898 - in other words, three times more likely to have been born in 1897 than in 1898.

He (age3) and his sister Maggie age 2 months were with their grandparents Hugh & Margaret Donachie both age 50, plus their 5 children. Abode Hillside Cottage, Kilwinning.

Maybe you could help us out by giving us the info. you know regarding at least a fathers name on his marriage if he was married or names of his children or anything else e.g. occupation of he/father.
The more info. you can provide, the more help can be given.
Do you know who both parents were?

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my post.
To answer one of the questions asked - no I don't know the name of the parents for the Robert Patterson, born abt 1898. I am helping someone with their family research. The 1911 Census in Ireland has a Robert Patterson, 13, born Ayrshire, living with his grandfather William, and I am just trying to work out who his parents were.
I have purchased the marriage record for James Patterson (born Ireland father Samuel) listed in the 1901 Census with his wife Jane (Jamieson) from Ayshire, but it is not them.
I will look into the other things listed.

Patterson's I knew in Glasgow with the double T had an Irish origin!
Skoosh.
-
I have some in my tree who are sometimes spelled Paterson and sometimes Patterson. They have no Irish connection as far as I know - the furthest back is a James Paterson who married Margaret Bailey in Corstorphine (which is now part of Edinburgh) in 1762.

Irish Patterson's map, http://johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=patterson
Note the proximity to Glasgow!

-
What jumps out at me from that map is the prevalence of the name in Ulster, suggesting that perhaps the Irish Pat(t)ersons could be the descendants of Scots who moved to Ulster during the Plantation.
-
Could be FF but the Irish also have it as son of Patrick!

Maybe I should have said "some of the Irish Pat(t)ersons", or "many of ..." or even "most of ..."

Have you discounted any of the 4 families from the 1911 in Scotland with a missing Robert?
They of course may not necessarily be one of the correct families e.g. if your Roberts' family had moved elesewhere after his birth by 1901?
