Title: Y-dna test and a different last name?
Post by: thecalifornialife on Sunday 10 February 19 16:51 GMT (UK)
I took a dna test on ftdna. I have a cousin who has a genetic distance of 3 at 37 markers with the same last name as me. When I change the chromosome markers to 25, I have several people at a genetic distance of 1 and 2 with different surnames than me. Who is technically closer related to me? How would different surnames happen? Is the genetic relationship most likely pre-surname time frame?

Hi TheCaliforniaLife,

I would recommend that you go to the FTDNA Learning Center and find the Webinar entitled "Help, My Y-DNA Matches have a Different Surname" by Elise Friedman or watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiv0Ny6nvAY&feature=youtu.be

Try using the TIP calculator on each of these Y-DNA results. It will give you probablilites of the connection being within a number of generations.
