Hi
I am trying to find the birth location for John Jacobs, it is the top line on the attachment and we know it was in Russia Poland. None of the other census has the location past Poland.
Thank you for your help

Looks like Hosokoff to me
-
I agree,Hosokoff.
Unless the first letter is a W,and nor an ornate H.But it is not like the W for
Whitechapel,
Viktoria.

What census year does this come from Sally? I'm thinking the first letter looks more like a K.
Can you give us the census reference please? If we can see the whole page we may be able to see if there are any other letters that look the same.
-
K does seem more likely.
Viktoria.
-
I think K also, but whichever it is it doesn't want to be found on a map search.
The JewishGen Gazetteer might help you ... you can search variants of the name in individual countries or wider areas, eg: Eastern Europe, and it will suggest possibilities.

Well if enumerators wrote down what they heard.............then Kożuchów could well have sounded like kosokoff.

That's a good find, except the census says Russian Poland. If it's correct, I think that would be the eastern part of modern Poland, whereas Kożuchów is well to the west in the part that was administered by Prussia/Germany.

I had a look on the western part of Russia, just in case, but couldn't find anything like it. The only other that looked vaguely like it was in Siberia ;D
I then noted that they seem unsure on the entry, with Poland and Germany mentioned. I still think that this is the most likely, unless there are changes (as with St Petersburg) in the names of the smaller locations after the fall of Communism in the USSR.
