There is a Dennis Owen, registered in Nantwich Registration District in 1926 - mother's maiden name is Wright.  Is this the right area?

You are not giving us much to work with here:

1. When was George born?
2. When was he a butler at Coleshaw Hall?
3. What became of son Dennis Owen?

If it is it narrows down the time frame because it wasn't built until 1903.

Annette

I will answer your third question first...
What became of Dennis Owen ?

As far as I know from his son (my ex husband)who is still living...he
Ex husband was the eldest of four children he my ex was born November1944 ...
His father Dennis Owen(born about 1920s (1926 ? ) has passed on about three years ago...
George Owen was Dennis Owen's father...?
Was George born late 1800s  Say about 1899 or there about's ?
At least he bought him up with Gladys as his son so I'm told
Dennis was born illegitimate.
But my Ex believes/was told by his father Dennis...
Gladys had an affair with a bank manager !! …
But Dennis was always known as Dennis Owen...
Last I knew of George Owen he was married to/or living with a lady named Gladys this was about the early 70s they were living in Nutsford /Knutsford ? Cheshire...
Dennis Owen (son of George) moved from Cheshire when he was about 15yrs old so we were told by him...

Dennis Owen married his wife Laura no longer living...( Laura was born in Birmingham) They ended up living in Stanstead Surry ?
Then eventually moved down to Brighton Sussex...
They had four children..
First one was my Ex husband then a girl named Denise (now deceased)...and two more boys...

That is all the info I have been given.
Sorry if it does not help much.
I clicked to census but as I can't afford to pay to go through them I was hoping someone could look for me and help me please...
Thank you...

What was the maiden surname of Dennis's wife

It may be easier for us to work back from that

You don't need to ask the son.  If you know when and where your ex was born you can look at the index on freebmd for his birth registration  https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
It will show as  Owen, then first name  followed by mothers maiden surname then the registration district and number as per the following example
Births Dec 1912
Owen  Frederick      Warner    Lichfield    6b   904

Hi,

In that case, it looks like Denis W Owen, who married Laura Wheeler in 1945 in the district of Rochford, Essex. The electoral rolls in 1960's has a Denis W Owen and Laura Owen living in Surrey area.

I can see births for Owen with Wheeler as a maiden name in Folkstone - presumably part of the puzzle - and also one in West Bromwich which was the area of Laura's birth. Laura Wheeler's birth seems to be in West Bromwich in 1925 and there is a Laura Owen who died in Brighton Sept 1973 age 48- is this her?

Hi Alan I have sent you a PM regarding your last post...
Title: Re: Looking for George Owen Cheshire
Post by: Annette7 on Tuesday 29 January 19 22:26 GMT (UK)
I contacted SOPHIEDOG by PM yesterday (since dealing with living people) trying to pindown who her ex husband was and where 'Dennis' married, etc. as I had come up with a possibility.   Tall Al is right with regard to the 1945 marriage, etc. and the 1939 entry for George R. Lane

George Robert Lane was born 29/4/1890 Cusworth (Doncaster), Yorkshire and baptised 25/5/1890 Sprotborough, Yorkshire, son of William and Jane.   He married an Alice Maude Carling in Jun.qtr. 1920 Darlington.  Alice Maude Carling was born 10/6/1884, bp. 25/6/1884 Darlington, Yorkshire - age ties in with 1939 register - she died 2/2/1956 in Knutsford Hospital, of Colshaw Lodge, Over Peover, Knutsford, Cheshire, wife of George Robert Lane, butler.   The couple do not appear to have had any children (she was some 6 years older than him and 36 when they married).

George Robert Lane then remarried to Alice Owen 1960 Westminster.   Alice Owen was born 22/5/1893, bp.14/6/1893 Chester le Street, Durham, dau. of George and Eliza.   Her age ties in with death in Dec.1978 Macclesfield and in 1939 she was single, living 10 Gloucester Street, Westminster.   I suspect it may have been some kind of boarding house as she lived there from 1935 to 1939 per electoral rolls and 5/6 unrelated people living at same address.   However, although shown as single 1939 (as indeed she was) the electoral rolls 1935-1939 show her as Mrs. Alice Owen - was this for respectability as she had a child?   I suspect it was.

SOPHIEDOG says Denis W. Owen died within last 3 years - can confirm he was living in Brighton from 2002-2014 according to electoral roll (my source only goes up to 2014).Had lived there 31 years.   His wife, Laura nee Wheeler, died 1973 Brighton.

So, George Owen was actually George Robert Lane, a Butler, born 29/4/1890 Cusworth, Yorkshire who married Alice Maude Carling 1920 Doncaster.    'Gladys' was actually Alice Owen b.22/5/1893 Chester le Street, Durham who at some point moved to London where she was from 1935 until her marriage to George Robert Lane in 1960.  He then takes her back to Knutsford, Cheshire where they both subsequently died.    Although single, from 1935-1939 she is listing herself as Mrs Alice Owen and I'm assuming this is because she has a child.  We know now her son 'Dennis' was actually a Denis W. Owen born illegitimately ca.1923 - however, there is no birth entry for him under either Owen or Lane and thus can't even confirm where exactly he was born.

In conclusion, it seems that Denis W. Owen was told his father was George Robert Lane, Butler so had George had a dalliance with Alice Owen resulting in son Denis W. Owen or was he simply later to be his step-father?   I have suggested to SOPHIEDOG that she contacts Brighton Register Office to obtain a copy of Denis' death certificate which will have his date and place of birth.   I haven't purchased any modern day death certificates so don't know if his parents would be listed or not.

So, George Owen was and is always George Robert Lane, Gladys Owen was actually Alice Owen and Dennis was actually Denis W. Owen.

I can confirm though Dennis Owen died in a hospital in/near Haywoods Heath Sussex...
I went to visit him there just a few says before he passed away .
His daughter (now deceased) was with me at his bedside...
I believe the year was 2013/14 ?
So where would I send for his death cert ...in Haywards Heath Sussex or Brighton Sussex. ?

Thank you rosie99 and Annette7...

I am now going to trace the Laura Wheeler family...
Her parents etc if possible...
Any help will be appreciated...
Thank you all...:)

As Tall Al has written Laura's birth was/seems to have been in West Bromwich 1925.
I have looked for the birth on BMD index but as I don't subscribe I can't get further than page one !!

Is West Bromwich part of Birmingham ? …

Edited...Yes I have found out it is part of Birmingham  ;D

The only thing that concerns me re. the probate entry is that it is in the name of Dennis Owen - since he was Denis W. Owen one would assume if he left a will he'd have spelt his own name correctly.

There was no Will...what little money he had in bank (about £700 ) his daughter (now passed on) had it to help pay for his funeral...if I remember correctly...
Thank you all members who have helped me.
Very much appreciated... :)
