Title: Home of recovery Barrow upon Soar Rothley ?????
Post by: byott on Saturday 13 August 05 12:16 BST (UK)
Hello All.

I'm still looking for   Home of Recovery  , Barrow upon soar Rothley.   Leicester

During world war one. My G G  Uncle was sent there after being in the war for over 3 years he was suffering from shell shock very bad. & was sent back to England from the front line.

Only just over 3 months later he committed suicide at the above home. I have the death certificate. His wife lived in London at the time. Yet i could not understand why he was sent  to Leicester. Maybe some one can shed some light ??

I would just like to find out abit about the home or building.  It could have been a workhouse & part being used as a hospital.

Is there any one who could please check any papers for that time for suicides it was feb 1919. I now live in Australia.

I would so much like to find out as  we are doing our family tree. & i feel i know so much about my uncle now. I am in the process of getting his name  commorated on the CWCG. as it had been left off in error. & his name was misspelt.

His name is Fredrick Charles BYOTT.

I now live in Australia.  Thank you  Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you, but there is a Barrow-upon-Soar online newspaper, with some local historians who might be able to help:

http://www.barrowvoice.co.uk/spring_2005/old_barrow.html

Barrow and Rothley are two separate villages, about four and a half miles apart--does the certificate give both village names?

:-)

Hi again Sandra,

I just arrived home and opened an envelope from GRO containing a birth certificate... saw the headings... and it struck me: does your death certificate say, "Registration district: Barrow upon Soar", "Sub-district: Rothley"?

If it does, then the Recovery Home was probably NOT in Barrow upon Soar itself--Barrow had its own subdistrict. The Rothley subdistrict covered a large area of Leicestershire, including Woodhouse (where a Cheshire Home is now found, which in the 1960s was a children's convalescence home... don't know about before that), and Belgrave which is now part of the general Leicester urban area.

I did a quick web search, but could not find a Recovery Home just by searching in Leicestershire. Does it give any other indication of the address at all on the certificate?

Another source you might try:

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

A forum where you can post questions for free about WW1 soldiers

and its parent site: http://1914-1918.org/     where research can be commissioned (but see the "self help" link first).

:-)

Our messages crossed in the typing!!!  :-)

According to http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/lei.htm, Leicester Frith is in the Barrow upon Soar district, so it could well be in the Rothley sub-district.

I think there is a hospital at Leicester Frith... I *think* that today it is a psychiatric hospital (and I seem to remember a young friend at school being taken there after taking an overdose of pills).

Also known as "Groby Rd" hospital, the address is: Groby Road, Leicester LE3 9QF

:-)

Hi Sandra,

I emailed the librarian at Groby Road Hospital, Leicester Frith, to ask if it had been known as a Home of Recovery during the First World War. This is the reply (all the information that she had):

"In answer to your question the Ministry of Pensions used Mansion House as a "Home for Neuroasthenics" (shell-shocked soldiers) during what is known as the Great War."

Mansion House is part of the Groby Rd/Leicester Frith hospital. I'm sure this is the place you are looking for.

Best regards,

Alison
