Title: Cathham, Kent
Post by: shirleylds on Monday 14 January 19 15:39 GMT (UK)
Hi, I've hit a Brick wall on Joseph John Manners born 23 Nov 1840 in Chatham in Kent.  His father David was a soldier.  There are no records(that I can find) preseeding his marriage so I thought I could try and find Dad.  I need soldiers records for Chatham Kent for the beginning of 1840 do you know where these might be.  Secondly, there is no record of his birth in BMD indexes how usual is this for a birth not to be registered?

Chatham is a garrison town, the home of the Royal Engineers, but many Regiments were stationed there.

A solders records would be held centrally, not specifically by a place.
The National Archives hold any  surviving records, they should show up if you do a search of the catalogue. They should also be on Findmypast but nothing is coming up on a search. If he died in service his records were most probably eventually destroyed.
