Title: McGarry/Cassidy/Graham Glenarm and Larne
Post by: carlotta on Sunday 13 January 19 15:29 GMT (UK)
I have a Mary Jane Cassidy (1871 Glenarm - 1941 Larne) that married a James McGarry (1863 Tyrone - 1914 Larne) and has 2 children Susan and Catherine.  Susan emigrated to the US and Catherine died as a spinster and is interred in Greenland Cemetery Larne 1972.

Mary Jane McGarry then married a John Graham (1864 Larne - 1935 Larne)  and had Mary Margaret Graham in 1920.

I am looking for any info on Mary Margaret Graham who was born 27 Aug 1920 in St John's Place Larne.  She was Roman Catholic and I suspect was baptised in St MacNissi's Larne.  Any suggestions of how to proceed further?

Do you know whether she married or not...there is a probate record for a Mary Margaret Graham in 1961.

Thanks for that!  Pretty sure this isn't her.  I suspect she may have married in England according to someone who was in touch with St MacNissi's Church - they apparently have no baptism record but they did have a sacrament of marriage 1949 Holy Ghost Church Basinstoke UK.

Holy Ghost church cannot find it, perhaps the date is wrong.

My attempts to email St MacNissi's were unsuccessful and I dint want to be a pain as its not my religion.  Do you think it would be OK just to turn up on their doorstep or should I call first?

Oh Ok...I think I would call first which would give them time to take a look for you...I can't see a matching tree for her on Ancestry.

Poor Mary Jane, 49 years old when she gave birth to Mary Margaret ?

Was there a death notice for Mary Jane Graham when she passed away in 1941 ?

Were there any death notices or obituaries for the half sisters - Susan and Catherine which might have mentioned Mary ?

There was no Mary Margaret Graham marriage in Basingstoke in 1949 or near that date that I could see.  :-\

I have a newspaper entry for catherine but no mention of anyone.  Also her death cert lists the informant as HJ McGovern Person ? the body to be buried 15D Shane House Larne.  Cant make out what is ?   Shane House is long demolished.

I agree poor woman giving birth in those days at all......

Have you traced Susan McGarry or whatever her married name was ?  Could Mary Margaret have gone to her half-sister in the USA ?

Eric Jack A Watson - 26 September 1920 - passed away February 2000 Thanet with Dover Kent.
Register Number A7E - District and Subdistrict 5751A

Haven't found a Mary M Watson in that area - nothing shown for her birth date 27 August 1920 (unless I missed it)

I can't either...wonder if she used Margaret Mary sometimes.  Nothing useful on Free Family Search...the birth registration is there but no parent's names.

You probably have this - but Graham is such a common surname every where it could be very difficult to trace Mary Margaret Graham - living in the hope of finding her by going round the houses - so to speak....................this would appear to be her sister Susan on a Canadian Passenger List.

Susan McGarry born 1906 immigrated Glasgow Scotland to Halifax Nova Scotia on the Athenia -  arriving Canada 4 December 1927 - going to a Canadian Government Hostel - 72 Carleton Street Toronto. Mother named as Mrs Jane McGarry 5 St John Place W  Larne.

Have you followed Robert Strawhorn who was the step-son on the 1911 census ?

A few anc trees popping up now - one has headstone photo for the Doyles.

Yes he is Robert Cassidy.  I surmise he is the Robert strawhorn in the census of 1911 and his stepfather named him maybe according to local rumour.  His birth certificate says he was born illegitimate to Mary Jane Cassidy- strawhorn is a local hairdresser aged 20 when he was born.  Who knows I can’t think of any other reason he would be named strawhorn

Couldnt see anything further under Strawhorn - did come across a headstone inscription for a Robert Cassidy 1903 Ireland - passed away January 1981 - but nothing to connect him so far - probably more Robert Cassidy born 1903  ::)

As carlotta said, no obvious death notice for Mary Jane Graham, but did come across a 1922 newspaper item concerning her and husband John being involved in a bit of conflict with neighbours in St Johns Place.

Also spotted someone writing this (via google search):

Here's the information I have: Mary Margaret O'Brien (nee Graham, born Larne 1920) and Richard O'Brien (married in Holy Ghost Church, Basingstoke, 1949).

which apparently was part of a 'looking for children or grandchildren of' appeal in the Carrick Times in 2018.

Can see a potential marriage in Hammersmith district in 1945, Richard O'Brien/Margaret M Graham
