Title: Solomon Hulbert
Post by: Matt Williams on Wednesday 09 January 19 10:46 GMT (UK)
Hi
I recently discovered that my ancestor was a convict who was sent to Australia in 1822, his name was Solomon Hulbert and he was christened in Melksham, Wiltshire, England 1804 (apparently along with his 2 sisters Susannah & Mary). His occupantion was a shoemaker
I don't have a lot more to go on and would really like to find out as much as I can, particularly about his parents, on the information that I have, is there likely to be a way I would be able to look up his details further and perhaps even find his parents details?

Any guidance is really appreciated

Regards
Matt

Welcome to RootsChat Matt.

Do you have his baptism ? This looks likely :

Solomon Hulbert , son of John and Sarah Hulbert , baptised 20 May 1804 Melksham , Wiltshire

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

FindMyPast has a transcription of a baptism that might be him:

20th May 1804, parents John and Sarah, at St Michael, Melksham.

A Solomon Hulbert appears on a few of their Wiltshire Quarter Sessions records.

He also appears in the Australian records on FindMyPast; including a marriage in 1832.

Thanks very much, I do have a lot of his records once he hit Australia, including his children, wife and further run ins with the authorities.
I am particularly interested in how i can find out any details of both his parents, such as his mother's maiden name and possibly even their marriage date or birth date.

Sorry I know my way around the Australian sites, but struggle with knowing where to begin with the UK side

Again, thank you so much for the prompt and very useful information that has been provided so far

Hi Rosie

That is certainly the one, he was sentenced to death for the first one you listed there, but (thankfully for me  ;D ) that was commuted to life as a convict

It looks as though the first article I posted was an earlier theft of a watch and cash.  Ignore that I am confusing my dates

Hampshire Chronicle 18 March 1822 has him as stealing a watch & ch. (chain) - sentenced to death Wiltshire Assizes

You asked earlier about researching Melksham, Ancestry have images of the parish registers FindMyPast have transcripts.

Have you located a burial for his parents or either of them on census

Thanks very much again Rosie
I knew nothing about Eleanor at all.
With regards to John and Sarah, I have yet been able to find anything concrete about them
ie
Marriage
Birth
Death
Sarah's maiden name

The only info I can find so far is on the records you have mentioned here, I have been able to find those on FindMyPast, but each time it has a blank for Sarah's maiden name.

Have you found John/Sarah on 1841 (or later) census?

I can find a John/Sarah marriage in Wiltshire, but in 1777, which is too early. They might have moved from another county.   :-\

I have not found them on a census yet, I haven't checked census records before in the UK, so that was going to be my next step

Baptisms do not generally give maiden names of mothers.  If there are two surnames on a baptism it is often an illegitimate birth with both parents named.

I am not seeing a marriage at the moment for John & Sarah close to Melksham though I did wonder whether this was worth making a note of just in case.
14 Aug 1791 @   St Swithin, Walcot, Somerset
John Hulbert
Sarah Piper.
They were both of the parish.

Thanks again Nanny & Rosie

Both excellent pieces of information, I will for sure chase up the lead in Somerset as well

There also seems to be a Sarah Bennett who married a John Hulbert in Bath (about 12 miles away from Melksham) in 1799, which would seem quite promising

Have you tried locating Mary & Susanna to see when they were born.  I see they were baptised on the same day and Solomon 2 months later.

I had a quick look for them, but have not been able to find anything just yet, but mind you I only gave that a functionary glance, as have mainly been looking up the others.

I don't want to guess too much (for obvious reasons), but I notice that the 1791 marriage was at St Swinthin's church in Bath between Sarah Piper and John Hulme (bachelor and spinster).
Then the marriage for John Hulbert to Sarah Bennett in 1799 has them both listed as Widows

There is a Sarah Hulbert who passed away and her burial date is listed as 27 May 1793, St Swinthin's church Bath.

I am going to look for Sarah Piper's 1st marriage as well, but with the children born close by, the timelines in regards to the children etc and a lack of John Hulbert's marrying Sarah's it seems like a fairly strong match

If you look at my website:

https://hulbert.one-name.net/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I6121&tree=tree1

you will find Solomon's ancestry traced back to about 1500 - he is a distant cousin of mine (if my tree is accurate of course).

I would welcome any information about his descendants to add to the website.
