Hi all!
I’m looking for any information on John Spencer and his parents/siblings. He was born in 1879 in either London Road, Camberley (according to him on the 1911 census) or Yorktown, Surrey (according to his army records). His fathers name was William and they were both tailors.
I can’t find any Spencers in Camberley on the 1881-1901 census nor can I find any birth record for John. I know he was CofE (army records) so maybe he was baptised at a local CofE church? Again, no records! It’s honestly like he just appeared in 1903 when he joined the army (in Leicester) because I have a paper trail from that point on, but nothing before.
From 1903, he lived in Yorkshire (York, Barnsley, and Leeds) so if anyone has any information about him at that point I’d love to hear from you.
Any help would be great!

Did he marry & if so to whom, where & when?

London Road, Camberley (The A30) and Yorktown / Sandhurst area were often occupied by military staff. Have you considered that his father may have been a military tailor :-\

OK I see that he married Maria Annie Franklin at York Register Office, 21 September 1907.

He did marry Maria Annie Franklin in 1907 and they had six children between 1909 and 1922, they settled in the Holbeck area of Leeds. He was an army tailor so it would make sense if his father was too, I know that there was an army barracks on London Road in Camberley....if only I could find his birth record! The only reason I know his fathers name was William was because of John and Maria’s marriage certificate (where he was listed as a tailor and deceased) and also his army records.
I’m not really sure where to go with my research. I’ve got his marriage certificate, his children’s birth certificates, his death certificate, and his army records... :-\

I think the first child may actually have been this one born in 1908, and if so would have been on the way at the time of the marriage:
Male Spencer, mother's maiden name Franklin, born and died Mar qtr 1908 York.
Who witnessed the 1907 marriage?
-
Yes, that would tie in with the number of children mentioned the 1911 census (one alive and one dead).
I can’t quite make out the witnesses on the marriage certificate, I think it says F.E Setchell (or Setehell) and Lily Setchell (Setehell).
Father: William Spencer (deceased) Tailor (master)
