Title: Royal Navy Record Question
Post by: Leigh P on Sunday 30 December 18 03:56 GMT (UK)
My grandfather's cousin joined the RN in the early 1890s. I have a copy of his service record - the last entry has that he served on HMS Goliath from 29th March 1900 to 24th February 1901. In the Character Column it has VG and in the last column - If Discharged, Whither and for what Cause it has 'Run'. Does that mean he jumped ship/deserted? If not what could it mean? I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Leigh P

The link below has the abbreviation:

"R run, deserted"

Thanks so much Tony. I assumed that would be the meaning of it as he changed his surname but kept his true surname as a second name when he deserted.
