Hi
I’m doing some research into George Edmunds Williams, a Cheltenham solicitor, who married Millborough Carlton at St Martins in the Field, Westminster, on 19 February 1843.
Millborough is proving difficult to trace prior to 1843 so I’m keen to find out the name and occupation of her father.
If someone is able to obtain the full details of George and Millborough’s marriage lines I’d be very grateful.

What is her birthdate and birthplace on later censuses?
-
24.7.1841 baptism Cheltenham Gloucs
George James Cox son of Millborough Carlton - single woman

Hi
Marriage taking place on 19th February 1843 at St Martin in the Fields records her father as Thomas Carlton, Esq. (no occupation given) and her residence at time of marriage was Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
His father was Thomas Williams, Esq.and George was living at Trafalgar Square, London at the time.
Both ages given as "Full age".
-
1841 shows her aged 20 in Gloucs but not born in county. She also has a 2yr old daughter Mary as well as son George
-
Her daughter Mary is christened as Mary Milbro Cox daughter of George Cox (Clerk in an Attorney's Office) and Milbro on 23 October 1839 at St Mary, Gloucestershire.
Hmmm....did George Cox exist, particularly as by the time she had George she said she was a single woman? First marriage that she wasn't confessing to when she married in London to George Williams?
-
She was buried in Gloucs 15.8.1862 aged 46 so born c 1816
What is your connection to them?
-
What is her birthdate and birthplace on later censuses?
1851 gives her birth place as either Barrow or Burrow (writing not clear), Worcestershire. Or equally could be Berrow that actually exists... ;D
-
Hi Ruth
Can you give me the 1851 ref please as nothing is showing up on Ancestry apart from a Hannah Williams b Barrow Worcs living in Gloucs. Definitely not her
-
Hi Carole
No worries...they are sneaky....its under their initials....It is on FindMyPast (not tried Ancestry yet)

Thanks Ruth - got it now.

Looking at what I can find for Berrow its a bit of a blank for Carlton's generally.
The only one I can fit is a Milborough Napier, daughter of John and Mary christened in 1820... just throwing it out there that Thomas Carlton could be a stepfather...?!
Hmmm....edited...maybe not - I think Mary Napier died as Mary Napper in 1858...cancel that idea
-
The birth of their daughter Sarah Ann in June qtr 1844 has mmn as Cox
EDIT
Son George James Cox Carlton died 1842
-
Only one of those so far is Milborough Cox, daughter of Thomas and Mary baptised 24 April 1811 at Leominster, Herefordshire....
edit or the accidently transcribed (maybe) Milberran/berrow Cox, daughter of Thomas and Sarah of Worcester baptised 17 February 1817 that pulls the dates in a bit more?
-
FS has a baptism for Milberrow Cox 17.2.1817 Pendock Worcs. Parents Thomas & Sarah
-
you beat me to it -just edited ;D
FS has a baptism for Milberrow Cox 17.2.1817 Pendock Worcs. Parents Thomas & Sarah
-
Pendock is now in Gloucestershire but Pendock and Berrow are less than 2 miles apart
if parents are Thomas and Sarah Cox, Thomas was buried at Pendock on 24 April 1834

:) Agree, it looks like it, but if Millborough dies 1862 where is she 1861, and the 1851 family?

Yes.
She had been ill for some time and Mr Williams is in a shattered state of health.
-
George and Mary are at 6 Royal Crescent in 1861 (George Edmunds Williams dies in 1868 at 6 Royal Crescent according to his obit in the paper)
Brain hurts....Millborough and Mary may well be the same person...
-
She is Millborough on their daughter Sarah Ann's baptism on 1 June 1844 at Cheltenham

And Millborough at death

They must be the same person

George Edmunds Williams seems a very well to do man, had some standing according to various newspapers of the time.
I wonder if Millborough, having had 2 (on the face of it) illegitimate children used Carlton and invented George Cox on her daughter's baptism in 1839 to make it more respectable when she was Millborough Cox at birth. Maybe Mr Carlton was one of the fathers?
GEW certainly seems to have taken her 1839 daughter on as his own as this daughter names him as her father on her marriage certificate and uses Williams
-
Interesting though that she named father as George and also said he was an Clerk in an Attorney’s office. Makes me wonder if he was the father of those children too. Where was he in 1841?
And why did they go to London to marry?
-
:) Hi looks good, so who is the Annie Williams 21 Solicitors Daughter b Cheltenham on 1861?

Obit for G.E. says he came to Cheltenham in 1838 from Tewkesbury.

that had struck me too that he could have fathered the children out of wedlock and different names were used...maybe he was not free to marry her? Anything is possible. London is an oddity through and might suggest running away to get married if we not reading too deep into it. Can't see him obviously in 1841 ..there are that many George Williams' :D

Could this be Sarah Ann with a slightly dodgy age?
-
He’s definitely in Cheltenham by June 1839 (letter to the editor)
Added ..gives address as 2 North Parade.

newspaper report from 1 July 1841 gives his address as 2 North Parade. Will have a look on 1841 for that address and see what it turns up....funny how the editor of the newspaper is called Mr Cox...
-
I see Rob (poster) was online an hour ago but no reply yet to info found
-
I can only see North Place. Had one look through, don’t see him.

there's North Street as well - just running through it now
edited - don't see him there either....
-
He’s not at Edward Pruen’s (the solicitor he went to work with)
I see in one of the obits that they were accusing a committee of killing him by making him go to a cold meeting room in the winter in his wheelchair.
-
I see he was election agent for The Hon Craven Berkeley in 1841. Where is Craven Berkeley that year? Perhaps they were out on the hustings.

No, Craven is in London, Mansfield Street, Marylebone
-
I can see if he was running around with MPs that having 2 kids of out wedlock or marrying a woman who had 2 kids out of wedlock might not be the social fit.
There's definitely more to this one that meets the eye I think
-
The big long obit for him finishes up saying he lost “the fond and faithful partner of his life” in 1862
And leaves two daughters.

which would be Sarah Ann and Mary Milbro...actual birth certificates might be the only way to check just in case she named Dad for Mary (or indeed baby George).
I've drawn a blank on GEW in 1841

My thanks to you all for your responses – and particularly for revealing the name of Millborough Carlton’s father.
