Title: Help please tracing London Street 1841 - Harlington Street Waterloo Second
Post by: Fredsboy on Monday 17 December 18 12:09 GMT (UK)
Hello friends, I am after a little more guidance locating Harlington Street, Lambeth which pops up in 1841 census in Waterloo Road Second in District 13. The Enumerators schedule has this with Ann's Place, Mill Street, Providence Place & Union Place.

I have scoured Google and every old map I can find. The families all moved around the Waterloo to Borough area. I have found Gazette references to Harlington Street York Road and also proposed compulsory purchase for the SWR extension form Nine Elms to new Waterloo Station "on the east by Cross Street, on the south by Harlington Street, and on the west by Griffin Street, all in the parish of Saint Mary Lambeth in the said countv. at, or near York Street, York Road, Lambeth, to, at, or near Three Crown Square, ... Street, on the south by Harlington Street, and on the west by Griffin Street".

Union Place was the name of a terrace of Houses in Church Street which became Lambeth Road in 1840s when Lambeth Bridge started. Opposite is a Mill Street (quite a few in the area) and about 300 yards south I found a map that shows a Providence Place in what became Topaz Street. No Anns Place.

I would guess that it was one of the little streets between York Road and the Vine Brewery in this 1844 map http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/__data/assets/image/0016/304450/01284-1579.jpg

Demolished circa October 1847:

Agree with Shaun. It looks like it was renamed Griffin St. by 1850. Unnamed in 1830.

Thanks both, I just followed the same trail and figure it is somewhere underneath Waterloo Station parallel (North) with Aubin Street/Granby Street.  I sent a request to Rail Museum to see if they have any detailed plans prior to demolishing the area.

Found it - Mogg's new London guide, 1849. Thanks for the inspiration.

You're obviously looking at a similar 1841 census return as I, for Ann's Place and Harlington Street.
Mine is for the Strong family. Interestingly the one I'm looking at was baptised in St. Mary's Lambeth. Now a museum and nice cafe but the church I used to go to from our School in Archbishop's Park.

This area also had Lower Marsh.
