Help with a brick wall, please.
William Elderfield bapt. 1691 Harwell had 8 children that I know of, between 1713/14 and 1736 with a wife named Mary all in Harwell. Does anyone know who he married, please?
The nearest I have come up with is a Mary Hopkins who came from Lambourn but still not found a
date or any other info to confirm this.
There are some trees on Ancy who list his wife as Mary Woodley, but, she married William Belcher in West Hanney 12-11-1711.
Any help most appreciated.

Can't find anything in the BFHS Berkshire marriages index or on Ancestry, Family Search or Findmypast.

Hi artifis,
Thanks for your help.
It doesn't surprise me you can't see a likely marriage, as I have also looked at those sites.
I would think his name may have been mis-recorded or they didn't marry at all, I also looked over the border
into Hampshire but nothing came up there.
A big mystery.

Hi Alan,
It might also be worth looking in Oxfordshire, the OFHS do have Harwell's parish records amongst their parish records CDs so I guess Harwell was at one time in Oxfordshire. I've checked my collection of OFHS CDs but unfortunately Harwell isn't amongst them, my ancestors were based more to the East of the county.
In case you want to buy the CD that it's on their reference number is OXF-WAN02. This CD also includes the parishes of Ardington, Blewbury, Denchworth, East Challow, East Hendred, Goosey, Upton and West Hendred. I don't know that area too well so don't know if any of these are contiguous to Harwell.
Just checked, East Hendred is contiguous. The other contiguous parishes are Milton (AB01), Chilton (WAN01), W,Hagbourne (WAL02?) and Didcot (WAL02).
OFHS have a map of all the parishes which might help you spread out from Harwell.

Try the Phillimore transcriptions, there are quite a few free online.

Blewbury https://archive.org/details/registersofblewb70blew/page/n3
Upton https://archive.org/details/registerofuptoni08upto/page/n5
As marriages usually took place in the bride's parish, anywhere in old north and west Berkshire is possible. Even Oxford.

Hi Sloe Gin & artifis,
Thank you both for your help.
I already have the CD (OXF-WAN02) and several others that I've purchased over the years (both from OFHS & BFHS) and this marriage is totally invisible, (if in fact there was one).
I'll just have to wait till something turns up.

The Mary Woodly that married William Belcher in West Hanney was born in West Hanney in 1697. The Mary Woodley we assume marries William Elderfield was born in Harwell in 1691. I hope that helps.

Hi Ian,
Thank you for your help. I think I can see I was mixing up the Mary Woodley's . Now the way you have listed them I can see more clearly.
Mary Belcher bapt. 1697 the d/o John West Hanney. Strange, she is the only child of John Woodley listed but there are many parts of pages missing.
