Hi I have only been researching my family tree for a couple of months and i am already completely fascinated by what I am finding out. At the moment I am struggling to find any info on a relative of mine, I seem to be going round and round in circles.
The details of the relative I am trying to find are as follows:
James Kirkpatrick born in Scotland in or around 1770.
Married Elizabeth Hog or Hogg.
Had a son called William Kirkpatrick born 1797.
If anyone can help me with this search, any relevant details appreciated.
Thank You.

Have you looked at /located the records on Scotland's people?
Just that "Scotland" doesn't really narrow down the area by much.
Give FULL details from the 1797 record for a starting point
-
Thank you. I will try that. I know but Scotland is all the info i have right now.
Maybe that will change when I have been to that website.
Thank You.

If you've "only been researching my family tree for a couple of months" and are back to ancestors born c1770 (or even back to their son born 1797) I would be concerned that you haven't followed the family back step by step starting with yourself rather than starting with previous research given toyou or family trees, etc. found online.
-
I have at least triple checked every single detail on this one branch of my family tree. I do a couple of hours research a day so when i say a couple of months that is quite alot of research hours. I would never put someone down on my family tree unless I was 100% certain they are meant to be there. You must realise that what one person can achieve jn a couple of months is not the same as what another person could achieve in the same time.
I came on here asking for help and everyone so far had been very helpful. For this I am very grateful. But I did not come on here to be criticised and judged by someone who doesn't know me or how much work I have put in.
I am very serious about tracing my family tree not just playing at it.
Thank You.

Hello Eternal, welcome to the site.
As you are discovering this hobby is seriously addictive. I have had a short look at previous questions on here Re: Kirkpatrick and there are a lot. It may be worth some time going through them, if you have not already done so. Just put the name into the search box at the top of the page.

Yes it certainly is addictive and interesting. I will go and have a look at the information you have told me about. I am grateful for your help.
Thank You.

I merely said that I was concerned :-\ I know quite a bit about research since I've only been doing it since 1970 but unfortunately with all the wonders of the internet it is all too easy to 'trace' your family in a very short time. From your posts on this thread there was no way of knowing anything other than you've been doing it a few months and you've gotten back to 1700s.
-
Exactly you made a judgement based on nothing, you said that you were concerned but it came across as an insult to my ability . I only discovered this site yesterday and when i said i had only been researching for a couple of months I meant consistently. I have been looking into my family tree on and off for the last 30+ years.
Maybe in future you could research the person by asking them a few questions before criticising and making your own assumptions. I too come from the pre internet generation, having been born in 71, please do not assume that my research relies on the internet.

Sigh... ??? Lets leave this thread open for the purpose it was started for... family history research.

Hi Eternal
Have you come across this entry as a potential sister to William?
Margaret Kirkpatrick chr. 17 Aug 1794 SANQUHAR, DUMFRIES
Parents James Kirkpatrick and Elizabeth Hogg
If you are not doing already, make sure where you can to use a wildcard as Kirkpatrick and Kilpatrick are common spelling variants for the surname (such as Ki*patrick).

Also, there is a family tree on a/try that you could check (you need a subs to view it www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/28350218/person/12037695199/facts?ssrc=
They show another potential sister called Jane/Jean (common first name variants) born c. 1794 in Glencairn. Jane is listed as having married twice, a Joseph Milligan and then an Alan Burgess.
Her death is showing as being on 19 Dec 1878 in Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire.
No details on her parents included unfortunately :-\
Not sure how you can verify that these two women, Margaret and Jane, are sisters to your William. Sometimes occupation on a death cert for a father can help. If it shows as agricultural labourer...not a lot of comfort there really ::)

Thank you for that information. I have seen this Margaret come up in a few searches that i have done. I think that she may well be William's sister. Will have to look into her history and see if it matches his, then maybe I can find a bit more info on their parents.
Thank You
Tracy

Never seen that Jean before but i will look into it.
Thank You again for all your help, much appreciated.

A death recorded in Scotland in 1878 would normally include both parents names?
-
Yes, it would. As long as informant to the death knew that information to give to the registrar.
