Hi I'm trying to find John Craven Hide born 1869 in Paddington, on the 1871 census. I have him on the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses but I cannot see him on the 1871 census. Can anyone help, please
Thanks

I see that he is one of several child boarders with schoolmaster James P Woodrow in Romford in 1881.
Do you know who his parents were?
-
No, I was hoping to find him with his parents on the 1871 census.
In 1891 he's a grocers assistant in Harrow Road, Paddington (John C Hyde)
In 1901 he's a dairyman in Bexley Street, Clewer, Windsor, Berkshire (John C Hide)
in 1911 he's a grocer and dairyman in Clewer, Windsor, Berkshire (John Craven Hide)
-
He was wed 1894 Fulham district?
Any parents/witness names from that?

I'm currently located in Greece, so sending off for the wedding certificate could take some time.
I can see his marriage to Alice Harriet WESTLAKE in 1894 indexed on Ancestry but my subscription is with Findmypast which hasn't got it.

Thank you Annette. I was wondering where the CRAVEN came from.
-
Amelia Ann Hide bapt 27 September 1829 at All Saints, Pavement, York - parents Thomas & Frances.
I have a hunch Frances may have been born a Craven.
-
Thomas Hide marr Frances Craven at Acklam by Malton, York, 29 November 1828 (per transcription).
-
Brilliant. You were right AVM228. I can add all this new information to my tree.
Still trying to find them on the 1871 census.
-
For whatever reason (possibly due to moving house), the family clearly eluded the enumerator in 1871 and are not recorded.

Unless, for some unknown reason, they changed their surname. Ancestors of my husband did exactly that on one of the census, using the wife's mother's maiden name. ::) I wonder why they didn't want to be found? By the following census they were back with their real names.
Anyway, the way I found them was by searching on Ancestry using just their first names. So LockerZ could try that.
