Title: Married at sea? Where would it be recorded?

Wasn't sure where to post this. If there is a better place, please let me know.

I am helping a friend look for the marriage of her great-aunt. Ethel (M?) Neale b. 1883 in Coventry, fa: Abraham, mo: Catherine. She was a nurse. Married Cecil James Robertson b. 1877 in Buenos Aires, fa: Jorge Robertson, mo: Juana (Janet) Lawrie.

They might have met and possibly married on a ship between South America and England, possibly around 1923. Where would that kind of marriage be recorded? We have not been able to find a marriage anywhere else.

They traveled quite a bit - we have found their Brazilian immigration certificates and their names on several passenger lists.

Ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks very much! I found the records (and more) on FindMyPast, but no luck so far. I'm also trying to check Brazil.

They are both on the SS Highland Rover bound for Buenos Aires in October 1921 ( Cecil's mother Janet is also on board), in 1st Class, both intending to reside permanently in Argentina. So perhaps Argentina is the place to look for the marriage?

Ah-Ha! Missed that one - they traveled often. Thanks, Shaun, Argentina is first on the list, then. Hope records are available.

Also, today I found a record of Ethel being evacuated from France after June 1, 1940 and she was recorded as being "Miss" but I am not convinced.

If married at sea, it should be in the ship's log.

The problem may be, getting hold of that ??? ??? ???

Otherwise, if it was a British ship, have you tried the special section of the GRO records for events at sea / overseas?

Checked GRO. I think Shaun's idea of checking Argentina is a good one. I found the instructions for requesting a marriage cert and will send it to my friend. The odd thing, is that today I found a record saying a nurse, 'Miss' Ethel Neale, was evacuated from France sometime after June 1940. Since she arrived in the UK in 1930 as Mrs Robertson, what's going on? There are a number of women with the same names running around on ships at the time, which is confusing, but I've been using her birth date and other info to be sure I'm looking at the right one. Maybe she was in the resistance during the war... ::)

You'll have seen from the passenger lists that Cecil Robertson used the Royal Colonial Institute in Northumberland Avenue as his UK address.

He was elected as a non-resident Fellow of the society in 1913.  His address was La Caledonia, Colonia, Prospindad, F.C.S. Fe, Prov. Cordoba, Argentine.
