I wold like any idea of a date for this photograph please.
I was hoping it was around 1880 but being realistic... probably 1900.
If it is 1900 it would be John Scott Ellis senior from Chagford, Devon with his son.
the photographer was Gales Studio and is on a plain postcard.
White narrow border with one end wider.
Again Many Thanks Ken.

The fact that you mention a postcard & Gales puts this at least 1907.
The way they are dressed puts it even closer, post WW1 & into the 20's.

Such a distinguished looking gentleman. Figured I'd give the pic a little touch up.

I read on this site years ago that sometimes a family would years later, have a reprint from the original photographer... the careless extra wide border on one side made me think this, But now have to dismiss this.
I had the old gent down in my mind as John Isaac from High Bickington, Chagford Devon born 1822 - died 1902 age 79.
But now if it is a later photograph the contender has to be John Scott Ellis born 1849 - died 1929 age 80... the old chaps suit threw me... but I suppose people hung onto anything that hadn't worn out.
On the plus side the younger man is possibly my Grandfather Charles Guy Bradley who I've never seen born 1874 and died 1926. ;)

I would say the younger guy looks to be in his early 40s.

Thank you for the retouch photo. :D
Looks like the date for the younger man could work by jiggling the photo date back & forth...he was a labourer and died age 52 from a 30 day fever & rheumatoid infection from laying in foul water. (He had fallen into a ships hold overnight. )
So I lost both grandfathers to the same type of accident... both died from falling into a ships hold, the second gave an account before he died. :(

How Sad :-\ If you also would like your photos repairing Blake, just amend the titles to include a restore.

Hi Carol, I don't need this photo retouched anymore as I have the original. Thanks ;)
I think all I need to know has been answered on this subject...
Thanks to everyone. Ken :D

Hi Carol, I thought I had finished with this subject of John Scott Ellis, but in the meantime my other two photographs on site have been coloured, which look fantastic. :D
I'm now wondering if it's not too late to have this one coloured, I've tried to change the headline without any luck, maybe it's because I said Complete. ??? ;)
Kind regards Ken.

Thank you all so much for all your renditions, such various approaches.
DrDude after your work I notice that the ol' boy looks like he could be holding the bowl of a pipe in his hand, I've seen pipe smokers hold their pipe like this, including my brother!!?
Again my thanks to one & all.
