Title: Can someone identify this uniform please?
Post by: jaysee12 on Saturday 10 November 18 22:16 GMT (UK)
Hi, my great grandfather, Sydney George Young was born 20 Feb 1886 at High Easter, Essex, England and died 15 Feb 1976 at Southend on sea.  His wife was Lillie (Smith) and they married in Maldon in 1913.  His parents were William & Clara Young.  I have been unable to find any record of war service on Ancestry or FindMyPast.  I'm hoping someone can identify the regiment he was in by the uniform in this photo which was taken in 1917 at Maldon.  Thanks

The Highland Light Infantry ( a Glasgow based regiment) were based at Maldon from January 1916 until January 1917 before moving to the Curragh Camp in Ireland.

Can't confirm if this is the same regiment.

Andrew

PS.   I think they wore trews instead of the kilt.

Cap badge could be Royal Scots Fusiliers, but again was the kilt part of a lowland regiment?

I think he is a Corporal but has rosettes on his kilt which would indicate a senior rank???   I stand to be corrected of course.!   They certainly wore the diced glengarry.   The kilt is plain but obviously not the Khaki cover.   The HLI kilt and trews are quite distinctive in their tartan.    Incidentally David Niven the actor was an officer in the HLI!!!

Hi, thanks for the suggestions, I think you've put me on the right track.  I've found a medal card for an Sidney G Young in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders.  I googled WW1 uniforms for the A&S and they look very similar.  The medal card doesn't tell me much so I'll keep searching.  Thanks again

Jaysee
be careful = in the photo he is definitely not an Argyle, they had the biggest cap badge in the British Army.    The Seaforths again had a distinctive tartan and were decidedly more east coast Highland than the HLI who were obviously Glasgow side.

PS - can anyone lighten the photo?   the leg dress may help?

OK, thanks!  I'm having trouble finding anything about him.  He was wounded, shot through the elbow, and left for dead. My great grandma Lillie, received a telegram saying he was missing but luckily he was found and mended.  He spent his later years growing prize chrysanthemums!

A & S Highlanders sounds good. Kilt is covered by khaki apron to reduce visibility on battlefield.

A bit more on the Sidney G Young as mentioned.
Attested 10/12/15 into the A&SH as ? & later given no. 253225 which was his post 1916 no. as all TF Batts. were re-numbered early 1917.
At some point after this he was transferred to the 6/Seaforths no. 285204.
Discharged (sickness) 8/11/17 aged 32y & 272d.
Does this sound like it could be your man?
