Any ideas for the surname of the first witness?
The marriage is in Purleigh, Essex in 1829.

Even taking the rest away i can't hazard a guess

I wonder if he could only write his first name (i.e. John) and not his surname. Hence what looks like scribble?

GEFFRY?

I'm wondering if he got married in same church.... ;D if so is his name entered legibly by Priest/Minister ??

I've had a look through the marriages I've transcribed so far (1813-1829) and the Johns I've found are: Carder, Bradshaw, Cuthburt, Clark, Cole, Linsell, Hatch, Farrow, Kendle, Wilson, Philbrook, Cottis, Dunmour, Auger, Howard, Dowsett, Brown. None of which seem to resemble the signature in any way at all.
GEFFRY?
Possibly.... agree that it could be a G at the start, but can't be sure. Pretty sure the RY is correct.

Is it GEFYRY?

Is it GEFYRY?
Best bet so far. The two "Y"s look the same...

I keep seeing Young as the name.

Possible, but I can't make out an obvious "o"....

Eveyry
Evry?
Every?
Probably not but I think last three letters might be yry.

Another possibility?
There is a John Gentry living in Purleigh in the 1841 census.
Sure is a tough one!
PB
Edited to add....there is a George Brewer age 11 (so b. 1830ish) living with John in 1841.

That looks likely. Looking through the records I've already transcribed, there are quite a few Gentrys in Purleigh. Unfortunately though, no marriage of a John Gentry to compare the signatures. :(
