Hi everyone.
My husbands grandfather started life as Richard Caley in Durham, married Elizabeth Agar 1919 had 2 children. It is said he joined the militry 1928, this is where the fun starts, he changes his name to jones and gets married again, also changing his fathers name from William Caley to John William Johns. When his daughter got married on 14 July 1939 he is listed as dead, but turns up again as John Jones on the 39 register in Kent, what I would like to know is this possible, has the law been broken.

Apparently you can call yourself what you like as long as it isn't fraudulent in any way, unbelievable, but that was what I was told

That is quite true. But bigamy, or trying to escape debt is acting fraudulently.
