Title: William Blanshard- first Works Manager
Post by: Kingsmosslad123 on Tuesday 23 October 18 19:09 BST (UK)
My great2 grandfather was born in Gateshead in 1782 and worked at the Lemington Glass Works in Newcastle before moving to South Shields where he was employed by Cooksons. He appeared to have been 'head hunted' by the recently formed Pilkington Glass Company in St Helens where he was appointed Works Manager in 1930. He died in St Helens aged 73 in 1860.   A J Beaman

Hi , I'm afraid the dates you've given are all over the place and don't make sense. If you correct them I'm sure people will be willing to help. You haven't actually said what you are looking for.

"My great2 grandfather William Blanshard was the first Works Manager of Pilkington Brothers, having moved to St Helens from South Shields in or around 1830. Members of the Blanshard family worked at PB's from 1830 until 1963, terminating with the death of my uncle Albert Blanshard. To the best of my knowledge, I am aware of all Blanshards who lived in or around St Helens during this 130 year period, but if any have got through the net ! He is recorded as age 63 on the 1851 census, living at the Pilkington's Glassworks, manager of Crown Glass Works.

I noticed that 'Blue Dragoon' showed him as an interested party- Lemington Glassworks was one of my ancestors workplaces in the early 19th century.

Have you spelt his surname correctly?  No 1860 death in St Helens for a William Blanshard but there is one for William Blanchard

1841 & 1851 entries are also Blanchard

First wife Barbara died as Blanshard in 1845

William remarried in 1847 to Elizabeth Griffiths nee Henderson.  The entry on the cert shows surname as Blanchard but he signed the register as Blanshard.

Daughter Sarah was born 1848 and registered as Blanchard  ???

Are you really just trying to make contact with Blue Dragoon??

The correct spelling is Blanshard but the Blanchard spelling is more common and down to the person who writes it down, such as at Census.

'Blue Dragoon' appears to have been researching William as well.

The correct spelling is Blanshard but the Blanchard spelling is more common

Just out of interest, do you mean that the name was first recorded as Blanshard so that that is the correct way, or what?  I just wondered how the name first arose.

Thanks
