Hello,
Can anyone estimate the date of this old army photo please? I think it is of either my great-grandfather (1897-1968) or his father (1871-1898) -bottom row, second from the left. They looked really alike so I cannot tell and a date would help a lot. I thought someone might be able to tell the date from the uniforms or the guns?
Thanks for looking!

This looks to be of the second world war era so most likely to be the first guy.

Agree with Carol - certainly looks much later than dates for second man mentioned.
Wiggy.

Certainly early WWII. Battle dress. There's a Sten gun there and a what looks like an assortment of rifles. That and some older soldiers present I wonder if they are Home Guard. Pity one can't see the upper shoulders with shoulder title, which would show what unit.

Agree with the others. Looks like Home Guard WW2.

The Sten Gun started to be issued to Home Guard units in March 1942.

At least one World War One Veteran sitting wearing a beret. The way some of the men are holding their rifles leaves a lot to be desired.

Agreed the Sten Gun does push this to a WW2 era. Most likely Home Guard, if not it's gotta be prior to deployment to the European theater.
Hope you don't mind me giving the photo a bit of a touch up.

Thanks everyone for your help. And those retouched pictures look great Dr Dude - especially the colour one.
