Title: Is this Ancestry DNA offer just for Americans?
Post by: jillruss on Monday 15 October 18 15:58 BST (UK)
I've received a couple of emails from Ancestry in the last few days with an offer of saving 30% off a DNA testing kit - but they're only in dollars, and I can't see anywhere to convert it to pounds.

Is the offer only open to Americans and, if so, why do they keep sending emails to me here in the UK? I could do with another kit but have been waiting for just such an offer. Do I keep on waiting?  ??? :-\

Likely the best offer of the year will be Black Friday - the day after American Thanksgiving in late November. But whether it will be available in UK I don't know.

Unfortunately (not that I object to the offers, more to the name and the associated hype) Black Friday has come to the UK as well.  Last year there were offers from all the major testers at that time. I ordered a DNA test then for my husband, which he said could be a Christmas present for me.

Thanks - I'll wait then!

Will I be able to get a kit delivered to my brother's address even though I'm ordering it and Ancestry obviously know my address? Brother said he would do it but I want to make it as easy for him as possible - or he'll lose interest! You know what brothers are like.....!!

I see that Ancestry currently have a 'Christmas sale' on for DNA kits at £69.99 but when you add in the delivery charges etc it comes to virtually £79.00 anyway. The sale closes on Nov 20th.

Can anyone remember from last year if the Black Friday offer went even lower? Or am I being too hopeful?

The summer sale was £59, it should go to that at Black Friday and Christmas hopefully.

Presumably that offer is ending on Nov 20th as Thanksgiving is Nov 22nd so Black Friday, when I am sure the offer will be better is Nov 23rd.  I would wait for that.

I received a similar notification for their St. Patrick's day sale a few months back.
I tried to buy but it just wouldn't let me...I contacted their UK helpline but was told it was US subscribers only and I shouldn't have been sent the offer, which quite annoyed me, they did though tbf give me a discount by knocking off the UK delivery price...but it was still substantially more than the US offer.

As we now have the deep joy of Black Friday in this country, we should get the offer as well as the US. I'll wait! Only a couple of weeks.

It does, however, seem a bit naughty to advertise the current offer as a 'Christmas Sale' if they know its going to go down again in price after Nov 20th. Still, I stopped expecting honesty from any firm, company, government  etc long ago.  :-\

I was offered that, but only as a previous DNA customer when I logged in and out of the DNA test account.

Well, I tried that and its only offering me a kit for £69 + shipping as part of this Christmas sale which ends before Decemeber even starts!!!

It seems a cockeyed way of pricing - seemingly, different people get different prices. Do you think they had help from a 5 year old before setting their pricing?  ::)

It makes me not want to bother!

Could be Aled had it in their basket from an earlier offering, if you keep it in the basket you pay that price even if the price goes up elsewhere.

So where's the pricing consistency? madness!

Unless.... aled23 and melba_schmelba... were you both born under Scorpio, in the pike position with Mercury rising?  ::) :-\

Just a thought...

Yesterday afternoon (7th) I received an email from ancestry.com TO A CO.UK EMAIL ADDRESS offering me 59 dollars.  I've done anc dna but used a different email address so they probably see me as fair game.  Can't get the email to load on this tablet but if I remember tomorrow I'll see where the link takes me.

The link works, definitely 59 dollars, and buy 3 get one free to boot!  Pre-populated details for the ancestry account I used for my test a year ago to the day - special anniversary offer?

I would suggest that anyone who wants an ancestry dna test should contact them and negotiate - 4 for 3 at 59 dollars a throw is ?????  Someone do the maths for me!

Is the postage not much higher though from UK to US? You also will also usually get charged a conversion fee by the bank card you are using, up to 5% in some cases. I'd check that you are allowed to buy from .com as a UK resident.

I seem to recall that my original purchase was priced in US dollars and converted to sterling by my card issuer.  And postage was quite pricey.  Both are obviously things that any prospective purchasers will need to consider but the point I was making is that ancestry seem to be pretty inconsistent nay FLEXIBLE in their attitude to pricing and if you don't ask you don't get.  Have a deal in mind and see if they will entertain it.

Where did you send the kit? All Ancestry UK kits now go to Ireland, so the economy postage is fairly reasonable.

Definitely to Ireland, £20 rings a bell and I think £10 for subsequent kits (which is a bit daft as had I decided to get kits for all the family for xmas or whatever - I didn't - they would all have been mailed back separately).  Has it come down?  If so that has to be a good thing.

The economy postage is quite a bit cheaper than that I think.

Just checked, with Ancestry UK, expediated 1-2 day shipping is £19.99 for first kit, £9.99 for each additional kit. Standard shipping 7-10 day shipping is £9.99 for first kit, £4.99 for each additional kit.

I've just ordered a kit at the current offer of £49+ p&p, so thanks for the advice to wait for the Black Friday offer (although they appear to now be calling it a 'cyber week sale'!!).

I just hope it will give me some more results to get my teeth into - and, hopefully, some matches who actually have the power to read and type replies!! (I won't hold my breath!)
