An ancestor died in1990 at Nailsworth Glos and the Probate was dealt with in Llandaff.
Can anyone, please, throw light on why this should be: was it perhaps that executors resided in Llandaff area perhaps.
Many thanks

As far as I'm aware, the executor can choose whichever probate office suits them. My mother died in Surrey, I used Gloucester probate office as it was the nearest to me.

Maybe the solicitor handling the estate used a regional office.
Sometimes the probate service is overloaded and paperwork is sent elsewhere.
Another example, during WW2 probate was relocated to Llandudno just to keep the service runinng, safely away from what was happening in London.
use Rootschat search for "probate Llandudno" for many examples
