Title: Machine winder
Post by: drsenn on Thursday 27 September 18 12:55 BST (UK)
Hi,

Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of information on the following occupation: machine winder in steelworks (1901 Census in Jarrow, Durham, England).

Are you sure it is not Machine Minder ?

Have looked at an American census list of occupations and steel machine winder is listed. Dependant on the steel company, I would think he either worked a machine winding steel wire onto bobbins or more probably on a machine that made steel coils.

Stan,

You could be right, the first letter has a very fat line through it, so I thought it was a 'W', but it could quite easily be a 'M'.

Thanks Stan,

I will investigate the area around Jarrow, Durham further which may give me a clear answer. I think you are likely correct about the 'Minder' word.

If you gave us full details of the entry, we could have a look and help with interpretation.
