My Aunt Mary Dixon Hastie b. 1895 in Berwick on Tweed married James Alexander Unthank B 1891 in Berwick . They had a son James Hastie Unthank b. 1912 in Berwick. I have found his birth but cannot trace anything after that. I know the family moved at some point to the Hull area. any info on James much appreciated. Thanks Heather

Hello,
Published trees show james Unthank marrying Grace Eleanor Carroll, 1933, Stockton. September 10a pg 153
No middle name is shown though and one mentions mother as Hastie.

1939 National Register is showing a James Unthank, born 1892, Single, Smallware Pedlar at 10 Ryland Avenue, Kingston-upon-Hull.
That could be the father?
-
There is a death for Mary UNTHANK age 40 in Hull in 1935.
-
James junior would have been of an age for call up for WW2, so unlikely to show up in the 1939 Register.

If the tree is correct, although no verification is shown, James died ‘about 1942’. His wife did remarry.
I can't see a death so perhaps, if it is him, the death was due to WW2.
Nothing in CWGC record though.

Is this the same family? It says the father was a W. Unthank :-\
However William Paxton Unthank (born 1 q. 1911) and James Hastie Unthank both shared mother's maiden name Hastie :-\
If it is the right James this means he was still alive in 1945. Article from Berwick Advertiser 24 May 1945
Edit: ignore this posting and the next one - it's a different family (see reply #8)

William Paxton Unthank is in the same household as James and Mary in 1911

I think the chaps from the newspaper article were born in the 1920's-mmn Davidson.

Yes, you're quite right. For a moment I thought I was onto something there.

That would fit with the 1911 census in Berwick on Tweed, with Mary (Hastie) and William Paxton, where he is aged 19.

If the trees I mentioned have the right James Unthank marrying Grace, there is a newspaper snippet from 1944, mentioning her husband's desertion - Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail.
-
Not that it's any help finding James (if indeed it is the right James) but doing a free search on the 1939 register index on FindMyPast I think Grace might be wrongly indexed as Joyce E Isley (Muthank) on Stockton. She is in the Carroll household which would fit in with her maiden name.
Added: they are living in Beaconsfield Road which fits with the newspaper article.

Many thanks for all the info. I will look into it all. It is like a jigsaw puzzle
Thanks Heather

The boys mentioned in the newspaper article are the sons of William Paxton Unthank and Annie Davidson. William is the brother of James Alexander Unthank who is the father of the James Hastie Unthank born 1912 that I am looking for. James H could have been in World War 2 so his whereabouts could be difficult to find. I might have to get the marriage certificate for the James and Grace marriage in 1933.
Cheers Heather.

Hello All
Try this
William Paxton Unthank (Grandfather B1854 - D1916) had numerous children
One son, William Unthank (B1888 - D1970) married Anne Davidson in 1910, they had a son named William Paxton Unthank in 1911, but he died shortly after birth.
Another son James Unthank (B1892 - D?) married Mary Hastie in 1910, had 3 sons and a daughter. Eldest son named William Paxton Unthank (again) B1911 - D2002
Hence I believe the newspaper article has the sons attributed to the wrong brother.
