Thanks for all help on Ernest Bowthorpe. Unfortunately, I don't think any of them fit. He did marry Florence and I think he was killed in the war. His mother died in about 1886 not long after he was born. His father was William and he had a brother Charles and a brother William. Frustratingly I cannot find his birth!
-
Which Florence did your Ernest marry, and what’s the source of information about his birth family and his wartime death?
Did he and Florence have any children?
-
Any connection to Thomas Bowthorpe, on your other thread?

According to the register of effects his widow & sole legatee was Florence. So this could be our man
Apparently died of self inflicted wounds, sad to say

If the birth family information is correct, he may have been born Ernest GOOK c 1892; see this household in 1901:
38 Sun Lane, Norwich
William BOWTHORPE Head Wid 46 Shoemaker Gt Yarmouth
Charles do Son S 18 Wood sawyer Norwich
Mary GOOK wid 48 housekeeper Norwich
Francis do 23 lodger Norwich
Ernest do 9 lodger Norwich <<<
Sidney do 6 lodger Norwich
Walter do 37 lodger Norwich
RG13/1838/63/14
-
Birth reg: Ernest William Bowthorpe GOOK (no mmn indexed), Sep qtr 1891 Norwich 4b 127
-
About to post the same
Sidney's middle name was also Bowthorpe
-
Mary Ann GOOK died aged 54 in Norwich, Dec qtr 1905. She was living with William Bowthorpe by 1891.
-
William’s wife Julia Bowthorpe had died aged 35 in Norwich, Dec qtr 1885.
-
Mary Ann Gook b c1853 died Norwich 1905, She was housekeeper to William Bowthorpe in 1891 as well. She listed as single, William a widower. Not sure why they didn't marry,
-
Her husband seems to have been David Gook (marr Mary Ann Caroline Dobson, Jun qtr 1874 Norwich).
Birth reg for their son Francis Clarke Gook, mmn Dobson, Sep qtr 1877 Norwich.
Also David Gook, mmn Dobson, Sep qtr 1874 Norwich so perhaps they married in a hurry and it didn’t last.

Many thanks for all replies. Ernest had to have been born before his mother died in 1835 if my informant is correct! Yes he was connected to my original posting about Thomas Bowthorpe who turned out to be William! Have looked for Ernest under different name but am unable to find anything! He will probably turn up one day!

How could Ernest have been born in 1884/5 if his mother dies 1835 ??? I presume this was a typo.
It would help if you could post the details as to where you have found Ernest i.e marriage record to Florence or a census please. Equally who do you have as his mother?

Sorry yes was a typo!! Should have checked! I am doing some research for my friend and his grandmother gave him all the details about the Bowthorpes. However Thomas turned out to be William so Ernest could be wrong. I found a marriage for Ernest to Florence in nIreland and a death of an Ernest Bowthorpe in WW1 which I think is him. Florence married againa couple of years later. Thats all I know so far.
Th story was that Julia died of pneumonia after getting up soon after childbirth to admonish the other children who were quarrelling.

Could this be the births of 'Ernest', Charles and William? -

All have mother's maiden name as Howard.
Could 'Ernest' have been Thomas Edward Bowthorpe?
In 1891 the above Thomas is living with his Howard grandparents.

Have you looked at the information already provided on the thread about William Bowthorpe (snr)’s natural son Ernest William Bowthorpe GOOK born 1891? He is a match for the age of Ernest BOWTHORPE found as a soldier in 1911 in the Norwich Regiment, the correct regiment for the Ernest Bowthorpe who died in 1917. He also fits the criteria of having a father William and (half-) brothers named William and Charles.
However it was their mother, not his, who died in 1885. This could be the glitch in your informant’s information (the assumption that he must have been born by 1885 because Julia died then) which has prevented you finding his birth until now.
-
Would this be the marriage of the Ernest Bowthorpe that you are researching?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1915/09826/5568014.pdf
The name and occupation of Ernest Bowthorpe's father ties in with the census and details of the Gook/Bowthorpe household.
National Schools register has Ernest Gook with father's name William, residence Sun Lane (same as the 1901 for William Bowthorpe) Ernest's date of birth is recorded as 19 Aug 1891.

After the death of Ernest in WW1 did Florence go on to marry Hugh Griffin 11 Dec 1919 Belfast?
JJ
-
Ernest died in WW1. Apparently he died of self inflicted wounds. Does anyone know where I can find this information please
-
Ernest Bowthorpe married Florence Stewart (later Griffin) in St Annes Cathedral Belfast
-
Thank you Michael for that information
-
Florence was my Great grand mother, she and Ernest had 2 children, Josephine and Florence, Josephine died in infancy, Florence died in 1929.
I got information from the Great War Forum that Ernest died of self inflicted wounds while serving with the Special Brigade of the Royal Engineers (gas), he was RSM. I have tried to find out more about him, I did get some info from the Norfolk Regiment who he served with at the beginning of the war, but its sketchy.
-
I had some info sent to me from the Norfolk regiment if you would like it.
-
That would be great, it might add to what I already have, I could do the same for you

If you can PM your email address to me I will send on the email from the museum
