Hi Can anyone decipher these letters of the word that looks like 'sumervoise' or 'sununervoise' which I think from memory were on a medical report from the army.
There were a few people with this 'condition' listed but I have been unable to find out what is may be.
-
This is a tough one isn't it! ::)
It looks like summervoise to me but it is proving hard to find anything close to this on medical dictionaries.
What year is this report?

I agree re Summervoise. I wondered if it might be some sort of rash brought on in the summer heat but this is pure speculation :-\
-
I saw summervoise too & wondered if it was a term for freckles but can't find anything to suggest that except I now know the German for freckles is Sommersprossen - 'summer sprouts ::)

How intriguing, will be interested to find out what it means. Flushed complexion perhaps.
Summer sprouts blimey :-X

I checked synonyms for rashes, freckles, liver spots, sunburn, flushed skin, hives, wrinkles, moles, birthmarks, etc. Can't find it.

Just when I was about to give up, I found this! Now that we know how to spell it, if you google it as summer voys (2 words), or summer-voys (hyphenated), google spits up a lot of old books with the term.

Well found :) A map showing the area it originated from http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mod/ Love the other names freckles were also known by

Well found bbart! :)
I kept getting voise changed to voice, which was very frustrating!
-
Good job! That's definitely a new word for me. I'll have to try to work it into a conversation.

Seems that folk were struggling with the term nearly 120 years ago, an article in the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser of May 1899 included the following observation:
... Of a morning I have seen as many as a half-dozen persons washing their faces and arms with dew on a fine May morn, but I don't remember that it removed the freckles, or, as they were more commonly called, "summer-voys," a word I cannot understand or find in any dictionary ...

Oh well done, so glad to know what it means.

Thank you so so much .... I had the correct word then with summervoise but the spelling is a variant. I also tried searching freckles but did not get the same marvellous selection that you have. Brilliant start to my day ... :)
