Title: Royal Marine Light Infantry - 1870
Post by: MMaughan on Wednesday 05 September 18 05:11 BST (UK)
Hello:
     This is my first post.
Via Find A Grave, I found the death record for George Maughan, a potential relative who apparently was a private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1870.  I'd like to find leads to locating his service record including, hopefully, his birth date, home town, and next of kin.  I created a record for him on Family Search - L1GC-TWK - that has a source with the electronic link to the Find A Grave info.

Here's the data from Find A Grave:
Name:  George Maughan
Died:  23 July 1870
Buried:  Veterans Cemetery, Esquimalt, Capital Regional District, British Columbia, Canada.
Other Data: Pvt. R.M.L.I
                  H.M.S Chanticlear (sic)

I found some on-line info about the RMLI and about the HMS Chanticleer, but none that helps with the genealogical information that can potentially link him into my family tree.

Suggestions on how to proceed will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I am  not sure if this will help RMLI base was at Chatham, Kent Which was next door to RN Chatham naval base. Then  in the 1950's RM left chatham or closed the naval base in 1984. Records may still be? in the history research if you contact chathamdockyards which may have records if not the national archives in Kew hope this helps.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat

The National Archive have records, but I don't think they are indexed.

A g00gle search threw up Thomas Maughan enlisted 1877 - record viewable for £3.50, but I didn't search through every record.

Welcome to rootschat

My gt grandfather was in the RMLI c1881 and his records were at the national archives and not digitised, the reference to his records is available on TNA website by searching his name.  It gave the opportunity to obtain a quote for the record

ADM - Records of the Admiralty, Naval Forces, Royal Marines, Coastguard, and related bodies
Division within ADM - Records of Royal Marines
ADM 157 - Admiralty: Royal Marines: Attestation Forms
Subseries within ADM 157 - Chatham Division - Attestations and Discharges 1842-1912

Thanks all - good leads.  I'll keep trying to follow - I realize that this type of query and answer exchange doesn't happen quickly, so I'll be patient.

No idea when or where he was born.  Those are some of the things I'm hoping to find via his more complete service record, if it is available.
