I am interested in contacting descendants of Ada Rosina Colquhoun nee Bishop. My grandfather Joseph Colquhoun born in Belfast between 1875-1878. Was married to Ada Rosina Bishop 7th June 1900. His parents are listed as Andrew Colquhoun and Annie Colquhoun nee Smith. His second marriage was to Ada Bowyer in 1921. His second marriage certificate states he was born in Dublin. He was never divorced. His death cerificate shows he was born in Dublin and died at age 89 in 1963. We doubt he was born in Dublin as he enlisted in WW1 as a Protestant Soldier. His ashes are buried in the Protestant returned soldiers section of Waikamete cemetery so it's unlikely that he was a Catholic from Dublin. I have also been told he was born in Dumbarton, County Luss Scotland. My father and uncle were adamant he was Scottish and my brother remembers him having a Scottish accent. I am wondering if there were 2 Joseph Colquhouns in Auckland at that time and seeek clarity on this matter. Both his marriage certificates and death certificate show different ages and places of birth. It is believed that he may have arrived in New Zealand with his parents as my father spoke of Aunts and Uncles living in Auckland when he was growing up and I have made contact with one of their offspring. I also remember visiting 2 of cousins who lived in Selwyn Street Onehunga - Betty Lewis (nee Colhoun) and Ina Collins (nee Colhoun) whose mother's name was Jess. They changed the spelling of their name to Colhoun. Ada Rosina Colquhoun was buried in Mangere Lawn Cemetery in 1964. Joseph and Ada had 5 children. Leonard Robert Colhoun born 1900, Reginald Percy born 1902, John Colhoun born 1903, Myrtle Ivy Colhoun born 1904 and Ethel Gladys born 1907. Their last known address was Emma St, Mt Eden in 1916.

I can't find a marriage for Joseph Colquhoun,Calhoun, etc. anywhere in Ireland (there were lots of Protestants all over Ireland, including Dublin) so perhaps Scotland is possibly where he was born. Bear in mind that to a New Zealander a Belfast or N.I. accent might be very similar to a 'Scottish' accent. However he could have been born anywhere in Ireland but picked up his 'Scottish accent' if he lived there as a child. At this point it seems as thought anything is possible.
Best to start with N.Z. records then work back through any and all records.
Still searching a few things...

Thanks, no point in wasting time looking for Marriage in Ireland! ;D

An Irish civil marriage record wouldn't have given this detail-

Hello Gaye
A point to bear in mind, is that Rootschat is for tracing dead ancestors for family history.
Rootschat does not trace and name individuals still living.

JOSEPH COLQUHOUN (http://www.familytreecircles.com/charles-alfred-dixon-otahuhu-69118.html) was born in Donegal Ireland, a son of Andrew Colquhoun (1833-1903) & Nancy 'Annie' Smith (1834-1898). Andrew & Annie married about 1851 in Donegal.
On the 29 May 1879 they, and their family, boarded the ship "City of Agra" in London (Captain Young) and sailed for Auckland. They arrived on 8 Sep 1879, the passage taking 105 days.
(the above link shows their children, all born in Manorcunningham or Ballyhoorisky, Donegal, who emigrated with them)
Joseph first married ADA ROSINA BISHOP (1884-1964) on 7 June 1900
the children of Joseph Colquhoun & Ada Bishop
* 1900 - 1972 Leonard Robert Colhoun
* 1902 - 1965 Reginald Percy Colhoun
* 1903 - 1903 John Colhoun
* 1904 - Myrtle Ivy Colhoun
* 1906 - 1998 Ethel Gladys Colhoun
* 1909 - 1996 Hazel Adelaide Colquhoun
* Joseph & Ada SEPARATED
Auckland Star, 6 Jan 1913 I will not be responsible for any debts contracted in my name after this date - Joseph Colquhoun.
Ada Rosina Colquhoun had a further 2 children:
* 1914 - Nellie Rose Colquhoun (father not named)
* 1915 - 1995 Daniel John Colquhoun (father not named)
- in 1941 when Daniel served in WWII 46650, his mother Ada was listed as next of kin living at 7 Richborne St., Mt Albert
Joseph Colquhoun served in WWI as Rifleman 15340 with the 9th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, E Company, NZ Rifle Brigade. When he embarked from Wellington on 26 July 1916 he had listed his occupation as Tram Conductor and his next of kin as his wife Ada Rosina Colquhoun, 80 Lincoln St., Ponsonby, Auckland.
Joseph & Ada did divorce but not until 19 May 1932
.. On the ground of mutual separation extending over the statutory period of three years or more, decree nisi was granted to Ada Rosina Colhoun against Joseph Colhoun
In the meantime, on 6 Dec 1921, Joseph (bigamously) married Adelaide Leslie Bowyer and had 5 children:
* 1922 - 1978 Joseph Patrick Colquhoun
* 1924 - 2002 Vivienne Rose Colquhoun
* 1927 - 1958 James Lawrence Colquhoun
* 1928 - 2002 Donald Lloyd Colquhoun
* 1929 - 1929 unnamed born still Colquhoun
-
Ada Rosina Bishop was born in Somerset, England in 1884.
After her separation from Joseph Colquhoun (sometime between 1910-1913), Ada had a de facto relationship with Daniel Joseph Donovan (1883-1917)
Ada Rosina Colquhoun then had a further 2 children:
* 1914 - Nellie Rose Colquhoun (father not named)
* 1915 - 1995 Daniel John Colquhoun (father not named)
On 15 Nov 1916 Daniel Joseph Donovan embarked for war. He served as Corporal 33023, 10th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company, New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He listed Ada Rose Colquhoun as his next of kin, living at 57 Vermont St., Ponsonby and his son as Daniel John Donovan of Mt Eden, Auckland.
Daniel was killed in action 4 Oct 1917 at Ypres, Belgium and his memorial at Tyne Cot Memorial

Hi Gaye,
just added another note on the Joseph Colquhoun-Ada Rosina Bishop (http://www.familytreecircles.com/charles-alfred-dixon-otahuhu-69118.html) timeline
IMPORTANT NOTE
There was another Ada Rosina Bishop (1884-1945) in New Zealand, obviously at the same time. Maybe it was this Ada who was born in Somerset?. She married Frederick Ferdinand Stolz (1884-1976) in 1908 and had: 1909 Edna Sophie Stolz, 1915 Ethel Ada Stolz & 1917 Kathleen Dulcie Stolz. Ada & Frederick died in Wellington and were cremated at Karori
'Our' Ada kept her married name and died as Colquhoun in Auckland in 1964
Also, see at link where Ada had a defacto relationship, after she & Joseph separated, with Daniel Joseph Donovan and had two children to him. It could be worth following up on their descendants as well

Lots more now posted on N.Z. thread- very confusing to have to go back & forth between the two threads :-\
Regarding reply #16 - list of children for Andrew Colhoun & Ann/Nancy Smith (found via link posted there) is not quite correct-
(the above link shows their children, all born in Manorcunningham or Ballyhoorisky, Donegal, who emigrated with them)
Rosena Hervey Colhoun born 1873 Carrickballydooey townland- I posted link to her birth registration and link to map showing the townland

12. Robert born 1877 Ballybo https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1877/03010/2103233.pdf
13. Thomas Samuel (1878)- can’t see birth in Ireland- perhaps born at sea?
-
that's great thank you aghadowey
Will be researching, verifying and adding till the wee hours :-*
-
Remember that registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to see if church records of baptisms exist.
Also, I did query (think on N.Z. topic) is Maria Louisa married first in Ireland.
-
She may have been actually. I was thinking that last night because she is missing from the passenger list. It would have been a young marriage and she was in NZ by 1883, earlier if she had to meet and marry someone in NZ by then :). Other possibility is she met him over there or on board the ship over and married in NZ.
I haven't done an extensive research on Joseph's siblings as yet. Concentrating on him and his wives etc ;)
This is what I have on her ..
1862 - 1934 Maria Louisa 'Mollie' Colquhoun
Married Timothy Manners (1857-1930) in 1883 & had 11 children
Timothy worked for the Railways. They lived for a time in Westport.
Timothy died in a private hospital in Newtown, Wellington aged 73 and is buried Karori
Maria died in Newton, Auckland and is buried Waikumete
-
Here's the 1879 marriage for Maria L. Colhoun to George Taylor- her address Ballyboe and father Andrew Colhoun, there's an Annie Smyth as a witness but may just be co-incidence her mother was Smith-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1879/11056/8044805.pdf
Wonder if there's another passenger list with Maria and George coming to N.Z.?
-
gee, that sounds very like her doesn't it?
The marriage had to have broken down though because she married as Colquhoun. Her husband Timothy Manners was from Londonderry, Northern Ireland. MAYBE, they met and wooed over there then came over to NZ before 1883 to marry with her family around ??
Thanks for finding that (& other stuff) ;D
-
I have found a picture of Ada Rosina's bithstone which says she was died in 1964 aged 80 so that would mean she was born in 1884.
-
Have also found this: CITY OF AGRA: Left London May 27 arrives in Auckland Sept 9 1879

COLQUHOUN, Rosina
COLQUHOUN, Thomas

Gaye, we are going over old ground :o
All this is already in the journal
Hoping to find new info to add - meat on the bones ;D
-
aghadowey,
so Maria married in Manorcunningham 3rd April 1879 as a minor
Her parents and siblings left for kiwi on 29 May 1879
At least it puts Maria and some family in Manorcunningham and the dates are good. She may have traveled over on the same ship. I'm sure you are well aware how inaccurate (online/newspaper) shipping lists are. Just because she and hubby weren't mentioned doesn't mean to say she wasn't on it. Or they traveled later.
Two things are factual. She married over there and she married over here. Just have to find out what happened in the middle ;D (why she married in maiden name)
-
Maria Louisa Colhoun married in 2nd Ray Presbyterian Church which was outside Manorcunningham-
https://www.fahanchurch.org/raypresbyterian.htm
If she and George separated/he died/he left her, etc. they she might easily have resumed using her maiden name. The important point is checking her marital status on the marriage to Timothy Manner.

Evening all,
This is one of two topics dealing with the same subject. Merging them is likely to result in a loss of continuity and a very confusing read.
Keeping the OP's best interests at heart and with a view to keeping information in one place, I recommend that this topic now be considered closed (though not locked), and that all further posts regarding this family be placed on this topic on the New Zealand Board:
