Title: Sinnott Family
Post by: David J. Schaaf on Wednesday 22 August 18 16:47 BST (UK)
Hi - I have been trying to trace possible family members in Ireland, having recently completed a vacation there. My Grandmother's (mother's side) maiden name was Sinnott, her married name Carr - I do know that her father's name was Nicklos (spelling?) was born in March 1863, possibly in Wexford. He emigrated to the USA in 1881 according to records I've found but returned back to Ireland shortly after the death of his wife, who died during childbirth, having birthed twins - the twins died shortly after the Mom - this would have been around 1900. He left a family behind in the Philadelphia region of the US - Richard, Mary, William, John, Catherine, and my Nana (Margaret or Maggie - born 1898). I still reside in the Philadelphia area. I am one of 19 grandchildren of the aforementioned Margaret / Maggie Carr, nee Sinnott. Would love to be able to better trace my roots.

I want to thank you for the speedy replies-two of the six you referenced look like possibilities. Not sure what to do next! Not surprised that you do not see any marriages between Sinnott/Carr - i am thinking my great grandparents married upon meeting in the US - and as mentioned he went back to Ireland following the death of his spouse. I am thinking the Selskar residence is probably the one. what did you mean when you referenced Christian names?

Thanks for all the resources as I continue to track down the "right" Sinnott - I found his wife's name - Ellen - died in 1899 in Philadelphia, right before Nic Sinnott went back to Ireland. It seems Ellen's maiden name was Hickey, born in 1862, a tad older than Nic....if I am finding the right Hickey, she appears to be from County Clare.

Margaret Sinnott married Andrew A. Carr 1917 Philadelphia.

I think you could be wrong about Nicholas going back to Ireland (unless it was just a visit) - on 1900 census his occupation is Floor Layer!   Philadelphia death index has the following:

Nicholas Sinnott aged 40, widowed, died 8th July 1904 Philadelphia - Fancy Floor Layer.  Burial 11th July 1904 Holy Cross Cem.

This sounds exactly like your Nicholas to me and he died just 5 years after wife Ellen (she's also buried in Holy Cross Cemetery).

I knew and still know a lot of Sinnott family - most nicknamed Shay - Shay Sinnott even though they are Jack or Jimmy etc
I was actually having a pint with Shay Sinnott a week ago today - but - The Sinnott family in Garston are definitely from Wicklow town - a bit further up the road from Wexford ...Tony Sinnott - deceased was All Ireland Boxing Champion in around 1986 ??
Garstons nickname is "Little Wicklow " because so many Wicklow men came to Garston for work . I can put you in touch with living Sinnott family here in Garston

Annette - thank you very much! I would indeed feel much better, even though still a sad subject, if my great-grandfather did not return to Ireland and leave his children...thank you all.

and thank you Garstonite - would be glad to be put in touch with the family you reference. This is fascinating to me as so much of my family background is a mystery. Given Annette's evidence, I am surprised as to how a story like that came about, i.e. about my great-grandfather returning to Ireland.

Hallmark:  This is your family record in the surname study database:  https://sennett.one-name.net/getperson.php?personID=I36193&tree=Sennett  If that link doesn't work (links can change after updates) the easiest way to find the family is to use the search box for Andrew Carr then you can click on his wife (Margaret Sinnott) and see the rest of her family from there.  If you need any more information or want to add anything, just use the contact form on the website to message me.
