Looking for links to the name Honeyford in Co Tyrone. My great grandparents
Matthew Smith and Eliza Caldwell had named their last child
George Honeyford Smith and there are no other instances of Honeyford in the family that I know of

Heather,
I might be able to add some info that could possibly give a link to Honeyford.
John Honeyford (1825 - 99) son of Benjamin Honeyford and Abigail ? married Margaret Ann Smith in the Wesleyan Chapel, Strabane on 16 October 1861. On the marriage cert John was described as a merchant, from Strabane, and Margaret as a Draper, a widow and daughter of Alexander McClelland a farmer. Perhaps the Smith connection came in here.
John's sister Frances Honeyford (b 1831) at the age of 16 had married William (aka Thomas) Sweeney in Drumcree Parish Church on 30 Dec 1846. William/Thomas was 25 and from the same parish, son of John Sweeney (deceased). His occupation is not clear. I have been told that John went to Strabane with his nephew, Frances's son Thomas William Sweeney. Directories show Sweeney and Co Egg and Butter Merchants operating in Strabane for many years. I don't know who founded it and what John's role was in it. I have contact with a member of the Sweeney family who is also interested in family history.
Hope this is of interest. I will be happy to supply source details if you wish.

Thank you very much for your most interesting reply.
Matthew Smith my great grandfather was known to have a cousin in the Strabane area (name unknown) who was a farmer and from whom Matthew's son RJ obtained his butter for his business in Strabane
This cousin later moved to Scotland in the Aberdeen area
You also mention Sweeney and Co Egg and Butter Merchants in Strabane
RJ's son Robert Smith married Irene Sweeney born 1900 daughter of Tom Sweeney and ? Dean. My mother who is 97 told me that the Sweeney's were in the "egg business"
I knew that there had to be a reason for the choice of Honeyford as a 2nd name. I would love to have any information you have in this area and also to be in contact with your Sweeney researcher

Hi James, I'm searching for my ancestors James Hunniford born in 1832 in Drumcree parish, Co Armagh. His father was John, a farmer and mother Mary Jane. He emigrated to Australia sometime around 1850s. Are you able to help me? Regards Carol Yates in Sydney Australia

Welcome to Rootschat, Carol, but James hasn't been online since July 2009 so there may not be a reply from him.
-
thank you. Can I post this on a general chat room or have I done that already?
-
You've posted in the right place and it's just a matter of waiting to see if James does see your post and respond.
In the meantime do let us know if we can help by finding information or suggesting where you can search next.

Hi Carol, I have not been on Rootschat for a long time but happened to see your query about James. Unfortunately I do not have any information of your James, son of John and Mary Jane. You might want to look at my web site which contains my One-Name Study database on www.hunniford.net. If you do gather any information on early Hunniford/Honeyfords I would be really interested in adding it to the database. Regards. James
