Hannah was my grandmother's cousin and she was born in c 1867. In 1892 she married William Stockdale Warey at St Gabriel's church, Toxteth. They had 2 children, Roy and William.
Hannah died in 1899 in Brotherton and the Parish records for St Edward the Confessor note that she was buried 4th June 1899 and a small note adds "Drowned in river". An inquest reported in Wakefield Charities Coroner's Notebook states "drowned by accident in river Aire." The GRO district was Pontefract.
I just wondered if anyone could perhaps see if there were any reports in local newspapers? I'm not sure where I should look.
Here's hoping!

I could only find one report connected with this and it's a bit misleading !
Daily Gazette Middlesborough 3 June 1899
" While Mrs Burnhope of Brotherton and Mrs Warey of Liverpool and the son of the latter were walking on the bank of the Cut at Brotherton yesterday , the lad , in trying to reach a flower , fell in . The mother jumped in to save him , but the boy was drowned. The lady , fortunately , was got out alive and is progressing favourably. Mrs Warey only came to the village on a visit on Thursday night. "
Either the newspaper reported wrongly that the boy , not the mother , had died or she too died afterwards from the effects of the accident.

There is no young male Warey death registration at the relevant time, so it looks as though the newspaper reporter got his wires crossed.

Probably should have read 'lad' not 'lady'.

Wow, thank you all so much :D It did sound strange that the death was accidental drowning, odd the coroner's notebook didn't give more details. I would not have thought to look in Middlesbrough papers for a report.
I'm pretty sure the lad survived, it was certainly Hannah who died then, and I have both boys on the 1901 census.
Rootschatters are marvellous, thank you again.

The Leeds Times of Saturday July 22, 1899 has a small piece about The Royal Humane Society in London awarding a testimonial to Albert Hunter, miner, Brotherton, for plunging into the River Aire on June 2nd and saving a little boy named Warey.
So it appears the boy was saved and the mother drowned.

Again, thank you all for your help. Although not my direct line, I just got curious when I read "Drowned in River", just had to follow it up! :)
