Hi

I'm trying to find "Main Street" and "Old Row" on old West Cornforth maps.  My relative had a Grocers Shop in Main Street.  On the 1871 Census it is shown as being next door to The Kings Head and a couple of doors down from the Queens Head, but I can't place them on any maps or old photos of West Cornforth.

Also, where was Old Row.

Hope someone can help.

From the census, RG10; Piece: 4909; Folio: 26; Page: 17, this could be the King's Head which is the next pub from the Balaclava Inn going west down High Street, although there are more houses on this 1897 map than there were in 1871.

Hi Stan

It certainly looks like it.  I have been on the 1871 Census again and counted down from the Balaclava Inn to the Kings Head and it seems spot on.  I've looked at todays google maps too and there is a shop which looks like a Grocers Shop next to what looks to have been a pub.

His name was Ralph Parker.  He and his wife (Elizabeth) and the family are on the 1871 Census as living in Main Street, West Cornforth in a Grocer's Shop.

Yes this would have been near to where Cornforth Partnership Office is now.  The former butchers shop and next door was a grocers shop.

Thanks for your input.  I thought it might be the shop opposite the Cornforth Partnership office looking at Google street view, but I don't know the area or the shops next door to the Cornforth Partnership so I will put them on as possible sites too.

It maybe I just trying to work out what shops were used for and looking at historical maps, but least you know the area. Regards Andy
