Hiya,
I'm desperately looking for help tracking down information relating to my great grandfather.
My grandfather was born out of wedlock, and all I know from his Barnardo's record is that his father is named as Cornelius Cyril Smith, aged 23 (born approx 1901/1902). He was a Corporal stationed in India at the time with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in the summer of 1924, which is where he met my great grandmother.
This is a whole side of my family that I have no idea about, and the surname Smith is not particularly helpful. I would assume from his regiment that he was from the Lincolnshire area - but that is purely an assumption. My DNA results do, however, support this.
His approx birth year means it's unlikely military records exist in the public domain for him, but just to find a birth index for him would be wonderful.
Any help greatly received!

Hi, a Cornelius Smith (no Cyril) reg. Lincoln Dec quarter 1902. Might be your man

There were 9 Cornelius Smith’s (none with the middle name of Cyril) born in England 1902 +/- 2years, including 2 in Lincolnshire. One in 1902 as mentioned and the other 1904. The latter is on the 1911 census with his parents, he married and died in the county, as per one tree.
I cannot find the one born 1902 on the 1911 census and there are no recorded deaths?

It looks as though the Lincoln Cornelius was illegitimate
