Hello everyone. I’m wondering if anyone would be kind enough to supply me with any information they may have on Duncan and/or Malcolm McLarty.
I have all the details of Malcolm (1799-1868), the Taylor in Ayr, Scotland. All his sons, except James (who I’m off of) followed him out to Wisconsin.
Anyway, his Father was also called Malcolm, 14 Dec 1760, married to Janet Andrew born in Craignish Argyle. I think his Mother and Father were Duncan McLarty and Isabel Black. Duncan was also born in Craignish! I can only guess around 1730-1740. This is where I am totally stuck. I can’t find any children and I’m not finding deaths etc. Did they come off the peninsula? I don’t think they emigrated? Any help would be much appreciated x

Not much matching what you have in the OPR's from Scotland's People just this...

And there are no recorded births of any children.
No marriage of a McLarty to an Andrew.
The only Malcolm b 1790ish of a Malcom in Scotland is this one.

The problem you have is the further you go back the fewer the records. Either children weren't baptised or the records are lost. Deaths are even more scarce.
May I ask where this information came from?

I am descended from your James, sister, Marion and share the same interest in researching the McLarty’s. So will therefore keep a close eye on this thread.

Hi there Don and cousin Tom! I am so sorry for being so late with my reply. (And I can’t work the site grrr) Anyway I have Malcolm the tailors birth register and on it, it says that he is the son of Malcolm and Janet Andrew! A Tanner in Ayr! I thought I could get them on a census and/or surely some register through his occupation! Alas I’ve got nowhere x

If you ever go back to McLarty research, I have found a Scottish born Don McLarty who was a ship owner back in the early / mid-1800’s operating from Liverpool.
Malcolm McLarty (our Marion / James’ older brother) was down in Liverpool in the 1840s from Ayr for a few years as he got married and had two children there, I haven’t been able to make a confirmed connection to Don yet but seems to much of a coincidence for Malcolm to have gone to Liverpool without having family there to work for?

Hmmm. Well Tom, I’ve had a quick look at the info I’ve got on Malcolm
The 1841 Census when he is 17, has him on Ayr High Street
The 1851 Census when he is 27, has him on Ayr High Street.
He married at 20, Sarah McNeish in Liverpool.
Then according to what I’ve got, he’s in Chatfield USA, in 1857.
So, yes there are a few years, between the two Census he has been in Liverpool.
Lol I’m only repeating what you’ve said!! I didn’t know about a Don McLarty. But ai do agree with your thoughts that something took him down there!

I’ve only got Malcolm Senior as having four brothers. (This could be wrong). I have David, Neil, James and Archibald.
Drum Major Army, was David.
Neil worked on the Looms.
Archibald was a carpenter.
James shown on Census as a small farmer!
Anyway the boat thing is a possible because the boys would be reared on/at water.
Campbeltown is like an island. Any travelling to the “mainland” would have been by boat.

Malcolm was the first born, so it’s not an older brother.
I’m thinking an uncle maybe

Malcolm had two daughters born in the Liverpool area, Marion in 1845, then they were back down again in 1854 as Sarah was born there.
Donald McLarty was co-owner of McKean & McLarty Co. I am still trying to crack this but he certainly could be a hither to unknown brother of Malcolm Sr.
