Post by: Jumpinjackflash69 on Friday 20 July 18 23:22 BST (UK)
Good Morning'
i am looking for the birth of a relative who was born i a place called Mokoan in Victoria and was wondering if there were any churches or records because i cant find her birth. I found her Death and have just purchased the certificate and it states she was 21 when she died and she was born in Mokoan. I cant find the birth but in saying that she had a sibling who's birth wasn't registered. I cant find any historical society, any help would be appreciated.

google maps will give you the location of the Makoan district, east of Melbourne.

You will then see the names of surrounding suburbs and areas where you might pursue your inquiries.

It is difficult for anyone here to assist without a name for your relative.

Offline resources frequently reveal information not always seen online.

What were Violet’s parents names?

I’ve found one buried in 1918 - but can’t see the death reg - with an Adelia Ann who died in 1920.

Added: One in 1919 buried with Walter German Harrison

Delia Ann MURTHA married John Alfred HARRISON in Victoria in 1916.  (Amended am I mixing mother and daughter up??)

Olive May MURTHA born 1895

Violet May ??? born 1897

((Violet May's birth registration surname couldn't be Harrison that is for sure, also perhaps not Murtha, as Olive May Murtha appers in the Vic BDM's))

Here is the birth registered in 1899 in Victoria.

Violet MENTHA, mother as Delia.  # 25024.

JM

ADD,

Vic bdm online index allows wildcard search.  I searched for Violet with mother as delia from 1890 to 1900.

Wonder why they thought she was 21 when she died in 1918?
She was born at Carlton Women's Hospital.

Mmmm...

I am feeling a little unsure about the birth JM has posted.

Here is the birth registered in 1899 in Victoria.

Violet MENTHA, mother as Delia.  # 25024.

JM

There seems to be at least one other birth in the maternal name.

MENTHA Bedelia
Father Unknown
Mother Bedelia MENTHA
Year 1898
Reg 19504
At HOTHAM EAST

There are also a couple of deaths with Bedelia MENTHA as mother.

 ???

Bedelia Mentha the infant is also listed here

INFANT LIFE PROTECTION ACT INDEXES M-Q

http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/140063/20140715-0924/helendoxfordharris.com.au/archives/1966.html

Sounds like she was not being cared for by her mother but a nurse (Children are under two years but not newborns)

So if you are not nursing your child you can have another pretty quickly, which might explain the close together birth registrations

However also listed is Violet Frances Mentha 1899, that is not Violet May?

Certainly looks like she was not registered?

Mokoan seems to have been a farming area that is now a lake? There is a map in a video here showing names of farm owners in the area.

https://wintonwetlands.org.au/learn/european-history/

It is curious that other sister Olive was registered twice, once as Murtha and once as Pettes. Was this around when Parick Murtha abandoned his family? Who was Patrick working for? Did they own any land here?

Must have been a terrible time

What about trying this Benalla Group, they are close by and the name Harrison appears in the members interests

http://www.benallafamilyresearchgroup.org/familyhistories

Was he the John Harrison paying rates here?
