Hi,
I'm trying to find my 3 x great uncle James Gillespie b. 27 Oct 1838 in Fort William, Argyll, to David Gillespie & Mary McMillan. According to his father David's death cert, James was living at 344 Holmhead St, Glasgow in March 1861.
I've tried to find him in the census, but can't seem to locate him.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks,
Daryl

Have you looked on Scotland’s People for a death for him? www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Do you have an occupation for him?

As David died in Stirling just prior to census night, it's possible James stayed home with his mother?
You don't say whether wife Mary was still alive?
A possible?

Hi,
As far as I know David's wife Mary died in Doune, Kilmadock in 1856. According to the 1851 census James was living with his parents and siblings at Cross Keys, Doune. His occupation aged 12 was a cotton spinner.
His address in 1861 on his father's death cert. states Holmhead St. Glasgow, but I can't find anything for him.

Census night is only 1 night of a yr i.e. James may have been in digs (Lodger) for a period working when his father died?
Have you checked this marriage?...

Unfortunately, from the censuses, that James was born c 1840 in Polmont and was a coal miner by occupation :-\

Monica...that takes him out of the equation which is good! ;)
I have a new name for you..."Monocle" ;D
As I say, elimination is as good as confirmation, always helps when others take part in the process of elimination which helps!
