All of these are very common names in the Weardale area, paticularly the last 3!  If you are a little more specific with time frame, villages, etc I may be able to help
regards

Raine - My gggrandmother was called Eleanor Raine christened 21/11/1818 married Jonathan Garthwaite 14/51842 died 20/3/1904 and is burried in Eastfate Churchyard. I know that her father was called George but this is where I have drawn a blank.
Maddison/Watson. My gggrandmother was Mary Ann Watson born 1834 married Joseph Maddison in 1856 and died in 1904. Her father was called George. In 1881 census she was living at Ling Riggs Ireshopeburn. I am trying to trace her Watson ancestors.
Any info would be appreciated

I have had a look at my microfiche and found the following:
this is the only George Watson in Ireshopeburn that I could find in 1841 census:
HO107/308_10
Ling Riggs, Ireshopeburn, Weardale
George Watson    30   lead miner y
Margaret Watson   35      y
Mary Watson   6      y
Elizabeth Watson   5      y
Hannah Watson   3      y
Abigail Watson   1      y
(in 1841 the ages of adults over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5, so George was aged between 30 and 35)

found this in BMD info I hold:
There are only the following marriages for George Watson at St Thomas, Stanhope (none at St John’s Chapel):
Mary Walton 4 June 1841(Heatherlycleugh)
Margaret Coatsworth 16.11.1833
Mary Watson 14.10.1832 (Heatherlycleugh)
Widower Isabella Shield widow 03.04.1834 (Heatherlycleugh)

There is only one baptism for Margaret Coatsworth in that time frame:
Born 02 Nov 1809, Christened 14 May 1811
Father William Coatsworth mother Frances Featherston
There is also a John Coatsworth with the same parents, born 03 June 1805, Christened 18 June 1805

There is a marriage for William Coatsworth and Frances Featherston 08 April 1805 St Thomas Stanhope.
hope this helps

Thanks for looking that up. I already had that information and my guess was that George Watson's wife was Margaret Coatsworth but in the 1851 Census the same family living at High Riggs has a Mother in law listed as being Abigail Barnfather. I have been to the records office on a number of occasions but cannot find a marriage between a George Watson and Margaret Barnfather.

Have you considered that Margaret's mother may have married twice?  would be worth looking for a marraige of a widow Coatsworth marrying a Barnfather.

Regarding the problem of Margaret Barnfather and George Watson:
I have the will of Joseph Barnfather of Stanhope, who died in 1840.
He mentions his wife, Abigail Barnfather.

He mentions two daughters, Mary Anne and Jane - but no Margaret; however,
he left some money to a Joseph Coatsworth of Riggs.

I hope this might help.

Here are a list of names from Weardale that I think will suprise you. When you see the numbers I think you will agree that it may require a few Christian names and dates. MADDISON 216. GARTHWAITE 23. PEART 369. RAINE 139.
WATSON 482. And out of that lot I can tell you that most of them intermarried
and a number of the  children will carry the surnames as a Christian name.
Besides that I will gamble that all of those families will be related to the FEATHERSTONE'S in someway. I have all Weardale arranged alphabetical so I can offer some help. Adamand

I've just started on my husband's side of the family and have found his gg g/f was called Featherstone Watson - he was born in ap 1830 in Pately Bridge, but I noticed that, astonishingly, there was another Featherstone watson born abt 1832 in Stanhope.  I'm sure there must be a link here somewhere - can't be TWO Featherstone Watsons, surely!

(He - ie the ggg/f - had a brother called Brown Watson - and no father appears, as far back as 1841 - old Nancy, mother of Brown and Featherstone calls herself a widow throughout!)  I'm dubious myself!

I've just been taking names off the census sheets to try and sort my families out and I'm beginning to think they were all related in Weardale :-[ especially around the St John's Forest area, when they were Lead Mining.

My families are Milburn, Smith, Elliott, Lowe, Kidd, Ellwood, Laidler, Peart.

As someone said, they used surnames for christian names.....I have Watson Peart, Emerson Lowe, Emerson Elliott and my g grandfather was Laidler Milburn...........that's what comes with close knit communities when the children seemed to be more in relatives houses than there own ???

Wow! you will have a job sorting them out. MILBURN about 80, SMITH about 300,  PEART about 350 or so. I do have the 1861 Wear Valley in alphabetical order if it helps.

I have JONATHAN WALTON FORSTER born 1812 in Weardale.  I'm guessing that his mother's maiden name was Walton, his father was Ralph. Anyone have anything on this family please?  :)
