Hello, Nicholas Hodgson was born 1815 in Aycliffe, Co Durham. He died in Calcutta General Hospital on 21 April 1858 and buried 22 April 1858. I don't know why he was there or when he went there but I believe it may have been after 1851. On Familysearch it says seaman on ship Arethusa. He was previously a coachman in England. Does anyone know if medical records for the hospital exist?
Thank you.

I looked at the burial record but it doesn't say anything about him dying at the general hospital (whereas it does say that for the next entry on the register). He died of chronic dysentery and was buried by a catholic chaplain. Seaman on the Arethusa is correct.

OK I now see that the information about the hospital is from a death announcement in the Durham Chronicle of 16 November 1860.

Hello Shaun, thank you for your reply. Where did you get the info about the dysentry (which I think was the most common cause of death) and the burial. Yes, my info about the hospital was from the newspaper.

The burial register (Fort William, Bengal) is in the India Office Records at the British Library. You can view the page image on FindMyPast.
